Bullets Over Broadway (1995)

Date: Wednesday, December 16
Time: 2:00 P.M.

Starring: John Cusack, Dianne Wiest; Director – Woody Allen; 98 minutes

Bullets Over Broadway stars John Cusack as a virtual Woody surrogate, a neurotic, jazz age writer whose new play sounds wooden and unrealistic to a low-level mobster (Chazz Palminteri) assigned to watch over his boss’s actress-girlfriend (Jennifer Tilly). When the hood starts contributing better story ideas and dialogue than what the official playwright can conjure, questions (not unlike those of Amadeus) about the price we pay to make art at the expense of other responsibilities are intriguingly raised. Palminteri gives a very interesting performance as the enforcer waking up to the desperate (and almost feminine) demands of his own creative psyche, and Dianne Wiest (who won an Oscar), Tracey Ullman, Jim Broadbent, and Jennifer Tilly are very funny together playing the ensemble cast of Cusack’s play.

The Splendor of the Painted Book

with Art Historian Donald Dwyer

Date: Monday, December 7
Time: 2:00 P.M.

The Late Gothic manuscripts of the 12th-15th Centuries were stunningly decorated and were called “illuminated” because they appeared to be lit from within. Distinctive styles developed in various parts of Europe to illustrate Bibles and books of hours. As Europe was buffeted by the Vikings, Muslims, Mongols, Crusaders, manuscript art reflected these influences—Celtic energy, Carolingian classicism, Romanesque ornamentation. At this time, northern adornment mixed with an Italian sense of form and naturalism to produce an International Style, illustrated by Pol de Limbourg’s famous Book of Hours created for the Duke of Berry. Its glowing pages blend a northern love of realistic detail with a southern interest in perspective and plasticity that point the way to the humanism of Jean Fouquet and Giotto.

During the 18th and 19th Centuries, Vienna was the musical and cultural capital of the world, the home of many famous artists and composers, including Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert and Mahler. Excerpts from many of these masters will be discussed, but it was Johann Strauss, the Younger, called “The Waltz King,” who brought the effervescent Viennese spirit to its zenith with his irrepressible operetta Die Fledermaus, along with his memorable waltzes, polkas, marches. Other Viennese musicians carried on this tradition—Franz Lehr with his vivacious The Merry Widow and Rudolph Friml with his romantic Rose Marie. A Portrait of James Madison:
Political Genius and Patriot

with Dr. Michael Libresco-D’innocenzo, Professor of History, Hofstra University

Date: Monday, November 30
Time: 2:00 P.M.

James Madison (1751-1836) was a small, frail man who played a major role in every aspect of the Revolutionary Era, from his college days at Princeton until his death at 85. Madison, our 4th President, well earned the title “Father of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.” He helped design the checks and balances that so famously operate among the Congress, the President, and the Supreme Court. He was also largely responsible for drafting the first 10 Amendments to the Constitution, the Bill of Rights. During his long and deep association with Jefferson, both struggled to ensure separation of church and state, and although he tried to keep the country out of war, he was forced into the War of 1812 (against the British), which General Andrew Jackson won in 1815. The program will examine Madison’s role as one of our most significant leaders and how his many achievements still affect our lives.

Dark Caves--Bright Vision:
The Glory of Prehistoric Art

with Art Historian Donald Dwyer

Date: Monday, November 16
Time: 2:00 P.M.

Bison, horses, boars, aurochs, cattle--race in wild profusion across the walls of caves deep within the Dordogne Region of France. The paintings are approximately 35,000 years old, but the earth colors are still bright and the dark outlines of the figures have assurance and elegance. Why would Paleolithic people paint pictures in the deepest recesses of caves--before they could write or grow food? Did this art have a serious purpose in magic-infused rituals devised to ensure fertility or a successful hunt? A compelling exploration of the sophisticated art of prehistoric man covering a vast
area--the famous caves of Europe and Asia Minor as well. The age-old sculpture of these areas will also be considered. Gain a new appreciation of the ancient artist as one who, beyond talent, thought about community, birth, life and death--issues that challenge us still.

19th Century Russian Opera
From Glinka to Tchaikovsky

with Dr. James Kolb, Professor of Drama, Hofstra University

Date: Thursday, November 12
Time: 2:00 P.M.

The highpoints of Russian opera include the works of Glinka, Mussorgsky, Borodin, and Tchaikovsky. The presentation will examine some of their best-known operas with excerpts from Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila, Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov, Borodin’s Prince Igor, and Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin—all composed from 1842–1879. Three of these operas were based on the writings of Alexander Pushkin (1799–1837), Russia’s greatest Romantic writer—the long poem Ruslan and Lyudmila, the drama Boris Godunov, and the verse novel Eugene Onegin. Prince Igor was based on ancient Slavic history. The operas represent a range of topics from fairy tales to history to the depiction of frustrated intellectuals in the late 19th C. (Eugene Onegin).
