Variety magazine called this film “a smart, subtle and seriously funny dramedy….” Following the unexpected separation from her husband (Broderick) and the death of her adopted mother, April Epner (Hunt), who is desperate to start a family, is contacted by her apparent birth mother, Bernice Graves (Midler). She turns out to be a self-centered local talk show host and a most unusual personality who tries belatedly to become a mother to April. In the meantime April seems to find solace in the arms of the parent of one of her students. She finds ultimately that the answer to the mystery of life’s questions cannot be simply solved.
