Ireland, a tiny island, has already given the world of literature four Nobel Prize winners in Beckett, Yeats, Shaw, and Heaney, as well as such famous non-winners as James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, and J.M. Synge. Ireland is now going through another golden era of writers as in recent years Joseph O'Connor, Colm Toibin, Sebastian Barry, & Colum McCann have joined John Banville, William Trevor and Roddy Doyle as widely acclaimed and prestigious Irish writers.
Patrick Hanrahan, a long time Bethpage resident and an MFA student in the Stony Brook-South Hampton writing program, will introduce the works of these interesting contemporary Irish writers. A series of one-hour monthly talks, covering three writers per session, will examine their bodies of work and suggest accessible entertaining novels. Mr. Hanrahan will include biographical information and read excerpts from works available through the library system.
The first session will include BROOKLYN by Colm Toibin, as well as books and stories by Nuala O'Faolain and William Trevor. Roddy Doyle, Edna O'Brien and John McGahern will be covered in the second session. Be sure to mark the two dates on your calendar and plan on attending one or both sessions.

Date: Thursday, January 14
Time: 2:00 P.M.
In this program, we will salute Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), composer of some 52 piano sonatas, the London Symphonies, the master of the string quartet, and more, on the 200th anniversary of his death. Haydn influenced the sonata structure and established the Viennese piano sonata as a unique genre. The recital will include parts of Haydn's dramatic "Sonata in E minor," the Sonata in A-flat," as well as excerpts from Beethoven's "Waldstein Sonata." The music will be interspersed with conversation and demonstration illustrating the composer's style and methods. Mozart and Beethoven surely owed much to this earlier master, who was a powerful force in the evolution of music.

Although self-portraits have been made since far-off times, it was not until the Early Renaissance, with increased wealth and interest in the individual, that they became popular. Self-portraits may also be included in a group scene, as Botticelli did, painting himself as a brash spectator in "The Adoration of the Magi" (1459). Durer, the first prolific self-portraitist, depicted himself many times from portrayal as a young dandy to a late Christ-like image, illustrating that creativity comes from God. In the 17th Century, Rembrandt painted some 40 works that range from an uncertain young man to the troubled, powerful portraits of old age. Van Gogh often presented intense depths of self-revelation, and Picasso, in the age of Freud, depicts complex psychological insights with nightmarish views of old age. He powerfully influenced the tortured, fascinating images of Francis Bacon. All were chroniclers of the human condition and all attempted to probe the ancient Greek maxim--"Know thyself."
