Conversations with Music:
Baroque Gems

with Lorna Noone, Flutist and Music Historian

Date: Tuesday, March 16
Time: 2:00 P.M.

The flute was a favorite instrument for Baroque Era (1600-1750) composers such as J.S. Bach and his sons; Handel; Haydn; Telemann and more. In the Baroque, harmonic complexity and contras were emphasized, and the period saw the development of the sonata, the suite, and early forms of the concerto. Telemann loved the flute and played it himself; and J.S. Bach wrote six sonatas for flute and harpsichord. His son, C.P.E. Bach, also wrote a flute sonata. Handel composed many sonatas for flute, cello, and harpsichord, and Haydn used the instrument extensively in his "London Trios." Lana will perform J.S. Bach's only unaccompanied sonata; the sonata by C.P.E. Bach, and other exciting examples from the Baroque repertoire.

Glimpses of the North Fork

with Rosemary McKinley

Date: Wednesday, March 24
Time: 7:30 P.M.

The North Fork's natural riches have been seducing people for more than four hundred years. The Algonquin Indians and later Dutch and English colonists first recognized the area for its waters rich with clams and fish, its fertile soil for growing crops and its abundant forests to support shipbuilding. Hearing the ocean's call, many have long admired the inlets, creeks and bays that contrast the ruggedness of the Long Island Sound with the tranquility of the Peconic Bay.

In this pictorial history, local author Rosemary McKinley showcases the nautical history, idyllic seaside settings and lush landscapes of this picturesque location.

This program is co-sponsored by the Bethpage Public Library and the Central Park Historical Society.

Art in the Afternoon:
The Splendor of Celtic Illuminated Manuscripts

with Donald Dwyer, Art Historian

Date: Monday, March 22
Time: 2:00 P.M.

During the Irish Golden Age (7th -9th Centuries), Celtic monasteries became seats of learning whose purpose was to spread the Gospel. The manuscripts they produced were looked upon as sacred objects whose beauty was meant to reflect the import of the contents. Depicting the spirit was everything for these artists. Drawing upon diverse sources--Celtic and Germanic elements along with Iranian and Central Asian influences--the so-called "barbaric" Celtic illuminators created an art of breathtaking complexity and imaginative ornamentation, bursting with vitality in its taste for abstraction, asymmetry, and surging line. Culminating with The Book of Kells, these manuscripts portrayed a reality not of this world and would lead to the Romanesque and Gothic styles.
