Fred and Adele: The Last Dance

A one-act musical play by David Houston

Date: Sunday, April 11
Time: 2:00 P.M.

The Last Dance imagines a scene with dancers Fred and Adele Astaire backstage between Broadway performances of The Band Wagon which will be closing its New York run. Adele is intent upon leaving their act and show business to marry. Fred and Adele just stole the show again with "Dancing in the Dark." Reminiscence sets in and with a piano and records of the tunes of Porter, Kern, Gershwin and others they sing and dance some remembered favorites such as "Dancing in the Dark," "The Man I Love," "They Didn't Believe Me," "Fascinatin' Rhythm," and more -culminating in a Broadway number Fred will have to do without Adele: Cole Porter's as yet un-known "Night and Day." The play features Melanie Lipton and Steve Corbellini performers, with Ed Heuther as Fred's valet. Don't miss this unique show!

Admission is free and Bethpage School District #21 residents will be seated first; out-of-area residents as space permits. A Bethpage library card is a ticket of admission for the cardholder and a companion.

Portrait Series:
The Looting of the Baghdad Museum and of Archeological Sites in Southern Iraq

with Dr. Donny George Youkhanna, former Director General of The National Museum of Baghdad and Visiting Professor, Stony Brook University

Date: Wednesday, April 14
Time: 2:00 P.M.

Dr. George was instrumental in recovering almost half of the 15,000 Mesopotamian artifacts looted from the Museum and Iraq's 12,500 archaeological sites during the American-led invasion in 2003. Some of these items are at least over 6,000 years old. While living in Iraq, Dr. George was in constant fear for his life. He was a potential target for violence because of his high-profile as a Christian government official, and also because of his frequent appearances in Western media. He had to change his car every day, change his route, the times he traveled--never knowing whether he would make it to the museum.

Dr. George has long had ties to Stony Brook University and was recently appointed visiting professor in the renowned Anthropology Dept. This provided a refuge for him and his family. He has graciously agreed to present a program on the famous archaeological sites in southern Iraq and the looting of the Museum--what led up to the looting, what was stolen, what was recovered and what is still missing. An amazing opportunity to learn about Iraq, past and present, and about a major part of world cultural heritage.

Conversations with Music:
An Hommage to Robert Schumann

with Soprano Helene Williams, Tenor Gregory Mercer and Composer/Pianist Leonard Lehrman

Date: Thursday, April 22
Time: 2:00 P.M.

Regarded as a pillar of German Romanticism, Robert Schumann's (1810-1856) genius was expressed in his symphonies, piano music, and especially in his lieder--into which he poured imagination and a great range of emotions. To this music, he brought an adroit use of rhythm and harmony and a profusion of lyrical ideas. Soprano Williams, Tenor Mercer and Composer/Pianist Lehrman all formerly with the Metropolitan Opera, are reunited in a bicentennial homage to Schumann. The program moves from classic individual lieder to stirring poetic cycles by major authors such as Heinrich Heine. Also included will be delightful piano interludes and explication. A memorable tribute to one of the most beloved of the German Romantics.

Art in the Afternoon:
The Miracle of Ravenna

with Donald Dwyer, Art Historian

Date: Monday, April 12
Time: 2:00 P.M.

The reign of the Emperor Justinian (527-565) marks the point at which the ascendancy of the Eastern Roman Empire was completed. Ravenna, on Italy's Adriatic Coast, became the capital of the Western Roman Empire and blended Greek and Roman cultures. Its magnificent architecture exhibited Greek Orthodox or Byzantine influences in round polygonal buildings crowned with domes such as the Church of San Vitale. Prime examples of the Latin style are the tomb of Galla Placidia in the shape of a Latin Cross and the Church of St. Apollinaire in Classe with a long-naved Roman basilica plan. But these buildings are merely envelopes for an explosion of vividly colored mosaics within--to be seen when one enters a shimmering, glittering realm of unearthly brilliance. The most memorable mosaics can be found in San Vitale with its dazzling depictions of Justinian, preserver of Roman Law, and the beautiful courtesan Theodora, who became his wife. For the medieval West, Byzantium had profound influence in preserving classical ideas and much of ancient science and literature.
