The Tragic Wrecks of the Bristol and
The Mexico on the South Shore of Long Island:

A joint program with the Central Park Historical Society

Date: Wednesday, June 23
Time: 7:30 P.M.

Arthur Mattson, historian of the Village of Lynbrook for twenty years, will present the true story of two American tall ships that were wrecked in the winter of 1836-37, off Rockaway Beach and Long Beach, only a few hundred yards from the shore. The twin disasters resulted in the deaths of 215 people. It is a story of unrealized hope for the hundreds of immigrants (mostly poor and Irish) squeezed aboard those cargo ships as if they were barrels of merchandise. It also explains how 139 of their unclaimed bodies ended up in a mass grave in Lynbrook.

The presentation reveals the dramatically different ways that Long Islanders of the period reacted to the wrecks on its coast; the incredibly brave rescuers from shore, the "fiends in human form" who cut off the fingers and ear lobes of drowned victims to get their jewelry, and the poet Walt Whitman, who wrote passionately about the wrecks in "Leaves of Grass." Don't miss this program on a fascinating period of Long Island History.

Art in the Afternoon:
Grand Russian Architecture--Medieval to Modern

with Art Historian Donald Dwyer

Date: Monday, June 14
Time: 2:00 P.M.

The medieval state of Kievan Rus' was the predecessor of the Russian State. The great churches, built after the adoption of Christianity in 988, were the first examples of monumental architecture in East Slavic lands and were influenced by Byzantine art. Early Eastern Orthodox churches were made of wood with small onion domes, thick walls, narrow windows, magnificent frescoes. In 1712, Peter the Great looked westward with major monuments designed in the Baroque Style including--the Winter Palace that also houses the Hermitage Museum and the Peter and Paul Cathedral. Luxurious Baroque by imported Italian architects was popular till the end of the 17th Century, but in the 18th Century, Catherine the Great favored more conservative Neo-Classical styles also designed by Italians. Political uprisings inspired 19th Century emperors to engage in repression and reversion to the Byzantine past, but at Tsarskoye Selo, near Petersburg, the nobility still built lavish palaces. See the Baroque Catherine Palace and the later Neo-Classical Alexander Palace. The Soviet Era brought dull sameness followed by flights of inventiveness at the end of the 20th Century. Russian history through the lens of architecture.
