Bernini--
Genius of the Roman Baroque

with Art Historian Donald Dwyer

Date: Tuesday, July 6
Time: 2:00 P.M.

Giannlorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) was the most important Italian sculptor and architect of the Baroque Period. In Rome, he created buildings, statues, fountains, and influenced many followers. With an astonishing virtuoso technique, he developed an emotional art, alive with theatricality and excitement. His architecture expresses the Baroque spirit in St. Peter's dramatic forecourt, framed by colonnades that Bernini himself likened to the all-embracing arms of the Church. In his masterpiece, the Ecstasy of St. Theresa, the artist uses the restless play of light and shade to convey deep feeling. He created dazzling fountains, powerful portrait busts, and set the course of European sculpture into the mid-18th Century.

Beethoven and
the Waldstein Piano Sonata

with Dr. Jonathan Irving, Director School of Music Southern Connecticut State University

Date: Wednesday, July 14
Time: 2:00 P.M.

Beethoven dedicated his 21st piano sonata to his patron, Count Ferdinand von Waldstein. Using this favorite sonata, one of the most popular of the 32 piano sonatas, we will learn how Beethoven constructed the piece in the 18th Century "Sonata Form"--three movements with an exposition, development, and recapitulation. Based on the models of Haydn and Mozart, he was able to build a 3-movement sonata in a most organic way, employing small ideas to make larger statements. The "Waldstein" was written in 1804, when Beethoven realized the full impact of his tragic deafness. The sonata can be said to express Beethoven's defiance of his fate and his determination to meet it courageously. Examples from Haydn's and Mozart's piano sonatas will be used to elucidate the "Waldstein" with discussion and example. A complete and stirring performance of the sonata No. 21 will follow.

Portraits: Sacajawea

with Alfred J. Bollet, M.D., Medical Doctor and History Scholar

Date: Wednesday, July 21
Time: 2:00 P.M.

Sacajawea is the most honored woman in American history--with gold dollars, mountains, lakes, rivers, stamps, schools, state parks, statues, and historic areas named after her. Not all is clear about these honors or her life, however. Some authorities say she died in 1812 at 25 near the Missouri River in South Dakota, and others say she died at 96 in 1884 on the Shoshone Reservation in Wyoming. Either Sacajawea lived a short, important life, making major contributions to the safety and health of the members of the Lewis and Clark expedition or she continued to travel, made many contributions to the well-being of her tribe, the Shoshones, and reached extreme old age. Dr. Bollet, a medical scholar is also an authority on aspects of American history and on Sacajawea. He will attempt to sort out the mystery, thereby revealing many little-known compelling facets of 19th Century American history. A fascinating Power Point illustrated lecture.
