Portraits: J. Robert Oppenheimer

with Dr. Thomas Hemmick, Professor of Physics, Stonybrook

Date: Tuesday, August 17
Time: 2:00 P.M.

Dr. Hemmick will discuss the science, politics, and life of one of the 20th Century's most enigmatic men--J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist who was scientific director of the Manhattan Project, responsible for developing the world's first atomic bomb. He is remembered as "The Father of the Atomic Bomb," and helped write the U.S. proposal for international control of nuclear energy. But following the war, his noted radical political views led to accusations of communism and a request from President Eisenhower that he step down as head of the Atomic Energy Commission. Oppenheimer's refusal led to hearings in which he was stripped of his security clearance. However, he later won the AEC's highest honor, the Enrico Fermi Award, for his contributions to theoretical physics, among them his seminal work on gravitational collapse and the existence of black holes. An exciting PowerPoint illustrated portrait of a fascinating and controversial figure.

Portraits:
The Vikings and Their Contributions

with Denise Gold, Archaeologist and Historian

Date: Thursday, August 19
Time: 2:00 P.M.

"God save us from the fury of the Norsemen," was a prayer once spoken in Europe. At the end of the 8th Century, the Vikings burst upon a shocked and unsuspecting continent. Lean ships with curved prows forged their way across the seas and penetrated into lands along the rivers. They were manned by ferocious warriors who plundered and pillaged. "Never before," wrote the scholar/cleric Alcuin of Britain in 793, "have we had such terror and suffering." Then, around 1100, most raids had stopped. The children of the Viking settlers adopted the local languages, customs, and names--the Vikings were no more. A fascinating portrait of the Norsemen--their origins, religion, art, way of life, their trails of conquest, and most important, their lasting contributions to European civilization. An exciting slide lecture.
