Cost: $79 per person all inclusive (no refunds) The Thimble Islands are a group of some 25 inhabited islands and hundreds of smaller islands in the Long Island Sound, around the harbor of Stony Creek near Branford, Connecticut. These islands are included in the Stony Creek-Thimble Islands Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. First Discovered by Adrien Block in 1614, the islands were used for everything from farming to quarrying granite, from bootlegging to hiding Captain Kidd's treasure! Celebrities including President William Howard Taft and cartoonist Gary Trudeau and his wife Jane Pauley have vacationed there. Dr. Hemmick will discuss the science, politics, and life of one of the 20th Century's most enigmatic men--J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist who was scientific director of the Manhattan Project, responsible for developing the world's first atomic bomb. He is remembered as "The Father of the Atomic Bomb," and helped write the U.S. proposal for international control of nuclear energy. But following the war, his noted radical political views led to accusations of communism and a request from President Eisenhower that he step down as head of the Atomic Energy Commission. Oppenheimer's refusal led to hearings in which he was stripped of his security clearance. However, he later won the AEC's highest honor, the Enrico Fermi Award, for his contributions to theoretical physics, among them his seminal work on gravitational collapse and the existence of black holes.
