Eric Luper's "Big Slick" Big Spring Read

The Deal, The Flop, The Turn, The River...the right bet to make?

Shushie has close to twice what I have. I can't bump him out no matter what, but I could wound him. I might cripple the best player at the table. I can be chip leader and gain control of the action. With the betting limits going up soon, that would be huge. I could pick off the other players one by one.
And if I win, I can get the money back into the register...
This is the right bet to make. There won't be an opportunity like this for the rest of the night...
I slide my entire stack to the center of the table.
"All in," I say.

From Our Writer's Workshop Jan. 24, 2008

___________________________________________________________________
A Smile Upon the Clouds

By Kayla Feeney

“He slipped, hit his head and fell.”

“Wait a second, back up, what did she just say?”I thought to myself.

My mother spoke sadly, telling me how he went in and out of consciousness. Everything was being blocked out as I would hear my mom’s echo over and over as I would hear my mom say,

“He is [is, is] in a betterrr placeee now [now, now].”

“How could this have happened?” I said to myself quietly. “He’s in a better place now? What is she talking about?! He is dead, gone, his time passed, no longer around the corner, vanished.”

Grandma walked into the room, looking as if everything she had, her house, clothes and all of her belongings had been ripped from her hands, the truth was she still had everything except her stick thin, frumped and curled over, neat freak, smells like the scent of Clorox, one and only, Charles.

“Grandma, Mom says that Char is in a better place now.” I told her with a confused look on my face.

“Oh my darling,” she said with a smile trickling down her face as she tasted the saltiness, “he is.”

        Huh? I thought to myself.

“Then why are you still crying?”

“Oh my darling,” she repeated once more, “It’s a terrible thing to lose someone, but to know there is no suffering and they are always with us is so important to remember.”

As I walked to school the next morning I looked up at the clouds and saw his face with a smile smacked upon it and I swear that he winked. I smiled and winked back as the cloud floated on.

How Can You be Anonymous at the Prom?

Prom Anonymous
by Blake Nelson

Sometimes, getting ready for your prom isn’t so easy. From the
dates, to the outfits, to the makeup and hair to the day itself,
everything can fall apart so easily without a clue. Blake Nelson
shows this through the story of three girls from three very
different social cliques. He writes about the troubles each girl
faces. Laura, Chloe, and Jace are three best friends, each
with different outlooks on the prom. One doesn’t want to go, the
other wants to but doesn’t have the courage to ask her crush out
and the third totally does…with her boyfriend of 14 months. But
now, the three will come together and be there for each other when
they need it most. This book can be looked at as a guide to your own prom
scenarios!

The book overall was written very well. It's fun to read especially during those rainy days. At times the book can get confusing though, so be sure to read a part over a couple of times if you don't get it!
Recomended!

Poems from the Heart by Amelia Rocissano

Music
By: Amelia Rocissano

The wide, empty, echoing space,
Fill with the pounding insistent beat
Surrounding me and lifting me away,
There is no escape,
So I surrender.
It takes me on a journey,
Soaring above my fears,
Far from worry and stress
and unhappiness
Keeping the encroaching world away
Keeping me safe
Then, the wide space is a
void once more
and the world comes flying back at me.

Memories
By: Amelia Rocissano

Two golden haired little girls were we,
Jumping and playing merrily.
Dancing, softball, swimming,
Always the sound of laughter ringing.
Best friends forever, or so we said
Scarcely apart until it was time
For bed.
What happened to those good times?
How could our lives not be intertwined?
But soon, tears came at the one-two-finish,
Every win, would you diminish.
No joy for my success,
Only jealously and unhappiness.
What happened to the good times?
How could our lives not be intertwined?
Quarrels and harsh words tearing us apart,
Leaving a hole forever in my heart.
The years have passed and wisdom come
And hope that perhaps it can all be
Un-done
Forgiveness, I give you mine
Freely
If you will give me yours
Truly.
For what about the good times?
How could our lives not be intertwined?

Don't Miss This Book!!!!!!

All Jin Wang wants is to fit in...
When his family moves to a new neighborhood, he suddenly finds that he’s the only Chinese-American student at his school. Jocks and bullies pick on him constantly, and he has hardly any friends. Then, to make matters worse, he falls in love with an all-American girl...
Born to rule over all the monkeys in the world, the story of the Monkey King is one of the oldest and greatest Chinese fables. Adored by his subjects, master of the arts of kung-fu, he is the most powerful monkey on earth. But the Monkey King doesn’t want to be a monkey. He wants to be hailed as a god...
Chin-Kee is the ultimate negative Chinese stereotype, and he’s ruining his cousin Danny’s life. Danny’s a basketball player, a popular kid at school, but every year Chin-Kee comes to visit, and every year Danny has to transfer to a new school to escape the shame. This year, though, things quickly go from bad to worse...
These three apparently unrelated tales come together with an unexpected twist, in a modern fable that is hilarious, poignant, and action-packed. American Born Chinese is an amazing ride, all the way up to the astonishing climax - and confirms what a growing number of readers already know: Gene Yang is a major talent.
