THE HOUSE OF THE SCORPION BY Nancy Farmer
This tale begins in a Petri dsh; where some DNA was divided, placed in the womb of a cow, and eventually grew into a baby. That child is Matt, a clone of El Patron, the leader of Opium, a country somewhere near the USA. El Patron or Matteo Alacran is a ruthless leader who was born to extreme poverty but rose to great power.
Clones have been bred to keep El Patron alive for more than 140 years. Alacran has also bred field laborers with mindless bodies and computer chips in their brains to keep them submissive.
Most clones have their intelligence destroyed, but Matt has been spared this fate, so his organs can be harvested for El Patron. Matt belongs to El Patron and everyone must treat him like an equal, even though he is hated by El Patron's family.
As El Patron grows weaker, Matt's enemies grow bolder and greedier. Is Matt to be sacrificed for El Patron's next ten years of life or can Matt find a way to escape and make a better world for himself and others living under the tyranny of THE HOUSE OF THE SCORPION?
THIS BOOK IS AVAILABLE AT THE EAST MEADOW PUBLIC LIBRARY and is RECOMMENDED FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN GRADES 7 TO 10. NANCY FARMER has also written A GIRL NAMED DISASTER, and the Newbery Award Winner, THE EYE, THE EAR AND THE ARM.

I think you should write a sequel to The House of the Scorpion. The book was great but the ending wasn't all that good. If you made a sequel I would be so happy. Please think about it and thank you. I really want to know what happens.

So sad. I practically fell in love with a fictional character out of sympathy. It's that well written.
And yes, agreed. We'd all like a sequal sometime soon. Again, it's a very well written book.

I just read this book for a school projest and in my opinion it is the best book I have found in the school library so far and also one of the best books I have ever read. If there's not a sequal yet there should be!!! I got kinda upset at the end of the book because I want to know what Matt does next, what happens to Maria, and how everyones lives turn out!!!
I MUST KNOW MORE!!!

Hi.
I was just wondering your purpose for writing this book?
Is it to give out a message that cloning is alright in the world although people are against it?

... I don't mean to repeat what everyone else has said at least 10 times already, but I gotta say, I would love to see a sequel to this book on sale in the near future. I had my doubts about it at first, but it is one of my favorites now.
And Isabella, the book wasn't actually disputing the issue about cloning in general. It was, however, saying that, if clones ever were made, they would truly be people- just like everyone else. They should have rights and be treated equally with everyone else- after all, twins may be born the same, but they grow up differently, and it shows.
