Welcome back…there’s still time to sign up for our college prep programs

I know. It’s THAT time of the year. Back to school, time to get back to the books. With cooler weather just around the corner, I wanted to remind everyone that there’s still time to sign up for some of our free college prep programs at the library for parents and teens.
Get ready for college with the following key programs:

Special lecture with Dave Marcus, author of Acceptance: A Legendary Guidance Counselor Helps Seven Kids Find the Right Colleges—and Find Themselves. Tuesday, September 22. 7:00 PM
“The college application process is a time of major anxiety for high school seniors and their parents. Fortunately for all concerned (including administrators, teachers, and private coaches), Marcus, the Pulitzer Prize–winning education writer for U.S. News and World Report, has documented the year he spent at suburban Long Island's Oyster Bay High School closely observing the rather unorthodox college counselor Gwyeth Smith and seven college-bound seniors. In this insider's look at the college application process, Marcus reveals the personal realities the kids and their parents face, the way college decisions are made and how and why Smith manages to ease the powder keg of worry and emotions with good advice, eventually helping make the right match for each student.” – Publishers Weekly
SAT Test Taking Tips with Joan U. Levy. Monday, September 21. 7 – 8:30 PM
Learn SAT test taking strategies to help raise your score.
College Financing with Barry Fox. Monday, November 2. 7 – 8:30 PM
For parents: learn the ins and outs of paying for your children’s college education.
You can register at TeenSpace or the Reference desk or by calling (516) 921-7161 x 242.
Enjoy the fall,

Twilight Movie on Monday!

Please join us in the theatre to watch Bella and Edward and stay to debate which was better: the book or the movie!
Monday, July 6th, 2009. 6-8:30 PM. Rated PG-13. Free, limited seating. Tickets not required.
Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) doesn’t expect much when she moves to the small town of Forks, Washington, until she meets the mysterious and handsome Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson)—a boy who’s hiding a dark secret: he’s a vampire. As their worlds and hearts collide, Edward must battle the bloodlust raging inside him as well as a coterie of undead that would make Bella their prey. Based on the #1 New York Times best-selling sensation by Stephenie Meyer, Twilight adds a dangerous twist to the classic story of star-crossed lovers.

Teen Digital Book Project

We need your creativity for our first digital book! We will be uploading your creative submissions to create a self-published keepsake book. Express yourself through writing, photography, artwork – we want it all! Informational meeting Tuesday, June 30. 3 – 4:00 PM in TeenSpace. Inquire at the TeenSpace Desk for more details or call
(516) 921-7161 x 242.
*All creative submissions can be emailed to Mrs. Long at syoteens@syossetpubliclibrary.org

Teen Digital Book Project Q & A
Q. What exactly is it?
A. It’s a fancy way of saying that we’re creating a literary magazine in book format.
Q. So it’s a book? Do I have to write something?
A. Only if you like to write. The Digital Book will showcase teens’ creativity in multiple formats. You can submit drawings, paintings, photography, short stories, poetry … the list goes on.
Q. Okay then. How do I submit something?
A. Easy! If it’s already in a digital format (something you can email, like a digital photo or a Word document) just email it to syoteens@syossetpubliclibrary.org . From there I will add it to the book we are creating using a program called BookSmart.
Q. Uh oh, my artwork isn’t in a digital format. What now?
A. Not a problem. We have 2 options. We can take a digital photo of your artwork or if it is a smaller piece (the size of a piece of paper or smaller) we can photocopy and scan it.
Q. What happens after you have all the submissions?
A. The fun part – making the book. I will upload the submissions into the BookSmart program. We can choose fonts and layout options to make it look really professional. When it’s finished, we will upload the project unto Blurb.com and they will create the physical book for us.
Q. When do you need us to send you the submissions? I need some time to work on it!
A. No problem. I’d like to have the submissions by August 1 so we can play around with the layout a bit.
Q. I’d like to help with the layout, what can I do?
A. Great! Let me know if you are interested by emailing me at syoteens@syossetpubliclibrary.org. We will meet on Monday, August 17 at 7:00 in TeenSpace. We can schedule other meetings if need be. I’d like to have the book finished before school starts in September.
Q. I’m drawing a blank – what topics show I be writing about/photographing/drawing?
A. It’s really up to you, but to help you get some ideas and to help us organize the book into chapters, I have some prompts that you can use. If you need help, stop by TeenSpace to pick up some idea prompts or email me and I’ll send you some.
Q. What happens to the book once it’s finished?
A. The library will purchase a copy to add to the permanent collection and it will be available on Blurb.com for purchase if you want your own copy.

Teen Open Mic Night
Those of you who attended our first Teen Open Mic Night last Friday, April 11, will vouch for what I'm saying: It was great. Held in the library's theater, we had lots of poetry and singing, guitars and dancing. Syosset teens are really talented. We can't put all the photos on the blog, so here are a few:
The first individual photo is Ted Tiller of the library's Teen Advisory Board, who worked hard getting both performers and audience members. Thanks for all your effort. Next is Stephanie Cohen, Allison Kodren, Ashley and Emily Moyett, Trisha Sanghavi and finally, Julie Nho, Cinduy Niu and Dorothy Chung. All the performers were great. We will definitely be having more Open Mic Nights. I hope you all participate by performing or cheering on your friends.

Book Discussion - The Body of Christopher Creed
Join us for a discussion of the book The Body of Christopher Creed by Carol Plum-Ucci
Annotation: Chris Creed grew up as the class freak-the bullies' punching bag. After he vanished, the weirdness that had once surrounded him began spreading. It was as if a darkness reached out of his void to grab at the most normal, happy people-like some twisted joke or demented form of justice. It tore the town apart. Sixteen-year-old Torey Adams's search for answers opens his eyes to the lies, the pain, and the need to blame when tragedy strikes, and his once-safe world comes crashing down around him.
Monday, February 25, 2008 • 7 – 8:30 PM • Free • Refreshments.
It will be held in TeenSpace on the third floor.
I hope to see you at the book discussion.

Annotation-Converting Kate
Kate was raised in the Holy Divine Church—it influenced everything from her homeschooling to her handmade clothes. But ever since her unbelieving father’s death last year, she has suspected that there’s more to life than memorizing scripture.
Taking advantage of their move to a new town, Kate—to her devout mother’s horror—quits Holy Divine, joins the cross-country team, wears shorts to public school, and even tries a traditional Christian church. As she struggles to come to terms with her father’s death and her mother’s unquestioning beliefs, Kate discovers there’s a big difference between religion and faith—and that the two don’t always go hand in hand.

Thank You to Jen Calonita

Last night, nine lucky teens and I had the pleasure of talking with Jen Calonita, author of Secrets of My Hollywood Life and the newly issued Secrets of my Hollywood Life: On Location. A wonderful time was had by everyone as they listened to Jen divulge some Hollywood secrets, talk about being a writer and senior entertainment editor of Teen People, and her forthcoming projects. We also found out that Jen is a fan of Meg Cabot, Ann Brashares and Sarah Mlynowski. So, if you need some reading suggestions, look up these authors. Thank you, Jen, for visiting our library and talking about your books. We all enjoyed the evening.
