Summer 2009 Required Reading

To the AP English Literature and Composition Class of 2010;

I am requiring four summer reading assignments from all AP English Literature students that I feel will best prepare you for September's course work. The two works that must be read are Carol Gilligan's In a Different Voice and Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye. The other two readings must be selected from the authors listed below. You may select two works by different authors or two works by the same author.

While reading, attend to your chosen author(s)' literary style, major themes, cultural influences, choice of images and choice of words. As you read, I encourage you to take notes on these elements as this will prepare you for class in September. Also, in Gilligan's work, consider what she writes about in relation to the way people think about relationships among "voice," gender, and patterns of moral reasoning. Her observations will be helpful in discussing patterns, archetypes, and voice in the texts we study and the narratives we write.

Summer Reading List:

Baldwin, James O'Connor, Flannery
Bellow, Saul Orwell, George
Dreiser, Theodore Steinbeck, John
Ellison, Ralph Tyler, Anne
Faulkner, William Updike, John
Fitzgerald, F. Scott Walker, Alice
Greene, Graham Warren, Robert Penn
Golding, William Woolf, Virginia
Malamud, Bernard Wolfe, Thomas
Morrison, Toni Wright, Richard

Carol Gilligan's In a Different Voice and Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye, are available at all local bookstores and the Baldwin Public Library.

*Works studied in other courses by the authors listed above may not be used for Summer Reading Assignment.
