following required reading has been chosen to prepare you for next year's
American Literature course. The two works that MUST be read
are:

Know Why the Caged Bird Sings - Maya Angelou
Poet Angelou recalls the anguish of her childhood in Arkansas and
her adolescence in northern slums in this first volume of her autobiography.

Kill A Mockingbird - Harper Lee (The novel, NOT
the screenplay)
Two children in a small southern town are thrust into an adult world
of racial bigotry and hatred when their lawyer father chooses to
defend a black man unjustly accused of raping a white girl.

Please note that both texts are available in paperback at various local
bookstores and in public libraries.
You
should take notes during your reading. In September, there will be graded
assessments given for both works.
