Summer
2009 Required Reading
Dear
Prospective 1H English Students,
First and foremost, we would like to welcome you to 9th grade English
Honors. In preparation for our study of the Classical Greek Hero,
your reading will include learning about important Greek mythology while
reading Mary Renault's novel The King Must Die.
As Summer Reading is required, the following is an outline of what is
expected before the first day of school. For your convenience, books and
book cards will be distributed to you along with this letter. Please make
sure that you complete a book card and return it to your teacher. Be sure
to write the number of the book on the book card where it says "Number."
The number can be found on the outside pages of the book or on the inside
cover of the book.

The
King Must Die by Mary Renault

Your
Task:
Take thorough notes while reading The King Must Die. Your
notes may be in outline form or written in a style that makes sense to
you. Be sure to bring these notes to school on the first day of class
as they will be checked and graded as part of your first assessment.
Further, you will use these notes in order to write a response to a specific
essay topic during the first few days of school.
*Be sure to define any words that you do not understand.
*Be sure to research any Greek gods/goddesses mentioned in the reading
You are responsible for understanding everything you read.
Assessments:
In addition
to your notes, you will take a multiple choice test in response to the
text and write one essay in response to your assigned reading of The
King Must Die.
