Summer
2009 Required Reading
ENGLISH 2H:
You
are required to read three works of literature in preparation
for English 2H. The first two works are epic poems. Prior to reading,
research the qualities of the epic hero. As you read, please identify
those qualities in the protagonists of each work. In September, you will
receive an objective, as well as a written assessment, for both works.

Odyssey -- translated by Robert Fitzgerald |
The
first work you are required to read is Beowulf, translated
by Seamus Heaney. This text is available at the Baldwin Public Library,
and the paperback edition may be purchased at local bookstores.
The
second work you are required to read is
Homer's The Odyssey, translated by Robert Fitzgerald. This
text will be distributed to students during their English 1H classes prior
to the start of summer recess.
In
addition, you are required to read a third literary work for enrichment.
Please take ample notes as you read, as this work may become the primary
source of the research paper you will complete in the spring semester.
