The
Baldwin Public Library now offers wireless "WiFi" access
to the Library's Internet service for properly equipped laptops.
Use of the Internet in the Library constitutes acceptance of the
Library's Internet Access Policy. Please
read the policy before accessing the network or see a Computer
Room Technician or Reference Librarian for a written copy of the
full policy.
What are the advantages to WiFi?
How
to connect?
Laptop or other device must be equipped with a WiFi adaptable
card (802.11a, 802.11b or 802.11g). When turning on the device,
it should automatically recognize the wireless network. No user
names or passwords are necessary. Wireless access points are located
on both the first and second floors of the Library.
Safety
and security of WiFi?
Although the safety of WiFi networks is improving, transmission
of sensitive information through the internet is not recommended.
Wireless networks broadcast data over radio waves, and anything
transmitted over the airways can be intercepted. Because these
wireless networks are open to all, it's possible that hackers
can intercept data transmitted via wireless, decode it and use
it. Users are cautioned against transmitting their credit card
information and passwords over WiFi, as the Library cannot guarantee
the safety of data when using the wireless network.
Restrictions
on use?
All users must agree to abide by the Library's Internet Access
Policy. Copies of the policies are available in the Computer Room
and at the Adult Reference Desk.
Can I print?
Printing is not available. If printing is required, users should
save the information to a disk or e-mail files and then print
them from one of the Library's computers.
Configuring computers?
Library staff cannot configure users computers, since everyone's
device is different and the Library cannot accept the liability
of handling the equipment. The Library is not responsible for
any changes made to your settings to access the wireless network.
The Library is not responsible for any loss of data, or for
theft or damage to personal equipment. The Library reserves the
right to terminate a wireless Internet session at any time.
