The Bryant Library is now a Wi-Fi Hot Spot! Patrons may
now bring in their own laptops and get high-speed wireless access to
the Internet from anywhere in the Library.
What are the advantages?
No waiting for a free PC
You may connect for as long as you like
Download and save files on your own computer
Access is fast
How do I connect?
To use the wireless network you will need a laptop or handheld device
with either a built-in wireless capability or a 802.11b or higher wireless
adapter card [also know as WiFi].
Its my computer. May I do whatever I want?
You will be attached to the librarys network, and must abide by
the librarys Internet Policy.
Where can you pick up the wireless signal?
You may connect from anywhere in the Library, including the back parking
lot! Signal strength varies within the Library.
Operating System
Your operating system must support networking, and the wireless Ethernet
card you purchase must be installed with the correct drivers for your
operating system. If you are using Linux as your operating system, that
will work also. Linux drivers exist for many wireless network cards.
Configure your software
Configure your wireless card to the following:
Network name SSID Any access point that begins with WLPUBLIC
Mode Access Point (Infrastructure)
Encryption WEP Disabled
Configuring your network settings
Note: Newer operating systems, like Windows XP or Mac
OSX, are designed to automatically recognize a wireless network signal.
Use the configuration instructions below to configure your wireless
adapter, if your laptop has been previously configured for another
wireless
network
or if you are using an older operating system.

We also offer wired Internet access and printing in our Laptop Work Area,
located on the main floor of the Library. Instructions for connecting
and printing are available in this Area.
How Safe is WiFi?
The Internet is a public communications network, which means that there
can be untrusted parties between you and anybody you communicate with.
WiFi unplugs the Internet and makes personal security risks more visible.
WiFi poses the same risks to your personal information that a wired network
poses, as well as some new risks. WiFi users need to educate themselves
about these risks, and take steps to secure their personal information.
Cautious WiFi users may choose not to transmit their credit card information
and passwords while using any WiFi "hotspot", including the
Library's. The Library cannot assure the safety of your data when you
use either our wired or wireless Internet access.
Is it secure?
Wireless Ethernet is not secure. Any user on the wireless local area network
can spy on unencrypted traffic from other wireless users. Although wired
networks tend to be more secure, the library cannot assure the safety
of your personal data when you use either our wired or wireless internet
access. All wireless access users should have up-to-date virus protection
on their laptop computers or wireless devices. Please note that the Library cannot assist you with your
laptop, card, or configuration. The Library cannot accept the liability
of handling your equipment. This is basically a self-help service.
Patrns must be familiar with their own hardware and be able to follow
the instructions that have been provided. |
