HERE'S HOW TO CONNECT YOUR WIRELESS LAPTOP
TO THE INTERNET
WHEN YOU'RE @ THE BRYANT LIBRARY

INSTRUCTIONS FOR: WINDOWS 98/ME - WINDOWS 2000/XP

Requirements:

1. TCP/IP must be installed on your computer.
2. You must have a wireless network interface card.

You may connect from anywhere in the library. If you need to connect to an electrical outlet, you may sit at the Laptop Workstation area located on the Main Level of the library.

Be sure to make a note of your existing network settings before making any changes.

Though the names of specific commands and dialog boxes differ among versions of Windows, the basic procedure for setting up access to a wireless network, and configuring client software is simiar.

Windows 2000 and XP share the same network settings configuration procedure, while Windows 98 and ME, though similar impose slight differences.

Windows 98/ME

Choose Start> Settings> Control Panel> Network Icon.

Click Configuration and then choose the item that represents your wireless network adapter.

Click the Properties button in the window that appears.
Select the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item in the Components list. You may need to scroll to find (TCP/IP).

Select TCP/IP and click properties. Click Obtain an Ip address automatically. Make sure that Obtain DNS server address automatically is also checked off.

Click OK to finish editing TCP/IP settings, then click OK and Close.

Click on the Wireless Network tab. Make sure that "Use Windows to configure my wireless network setting is selected" if you use Windows to configure your wireless adapter card.

If you use your manufacturer's application to control your wireless configuration choose Start> Program>ie Netgear>Wireless Network Settings. Follow your manufacturer's instructions.

You should see two or more network connections. Select USR5450.

Make sure to check the box that says "Allow me to connect to the selected wireless network even though it is not secure." Click connect.

****You may need to reboot your computer after making these changes.****

Test your connection by launching a Web browser!

Windows 2000/XP

Choose Start> Settings> Control Panel> Network and Internet Settings> Network Connections Icon.

Click Configuration and then choose the item that represents your wireless network adapter.

Scroll down until you see TCP/IP. Click on the icon for your wireless connection.

Click on Obtain an IP Address. Click OK. Make sure that Obtain DNS server address automatically is also selected.

Click on the Wireless Network tab. Make sure that "Use Windows to configure my wireless network setting is selected" if you use Windows to configure your wireless adapter card.

If you use your manufacturer's application to control your wireless configuration choose Start> Program>ie Netgear>Wireless Network Settings. Follow your manufacturer's instructions.
