Last night at the Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Carle Place, the winners of the 3rd Annual Essay contest sponsored by the Intellectual Freedom Committee of the Nassau County Library Association attended a reception, co-sponsored by Barnes & Noble, honoring this year's contest winners.
Congratulations to:
Pawan Mirchandani - Floral Park Library
Justine Matzen - Massapequa Library - Central Avenue Branch
Paula Spinelli - Franklin Square Library
Jessice Bender - Farmingdale Library
Alene Scoblete - Malverne Library (and RVC Librarian!)
Eleanor Lustig - Rockville Centre Library
The winners each received a Barnes and Noble gift card for their essays answering the following question: "Which book have you enjoyed that makes you appreciate the freedom to read?" The essays were read aloud by their authors before a very appreciative audience gathered on the 2nd floor of Barnes & Noble.

A book sale and signing hosted by Chapter One Books of Oceanside took place following the author's lecture.
Comedienne/playwright Amy Sedaris spoke to a packed audience at South Side High School last week at the Library's 2007 Endowment Fund Lecture. Known to be "a bit peculiar," according to her colleague David Letterman, Amy charmed the audience with advice and anecdotes from her best seller I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence.
This event was an opportunity for the Rockville Centre Public Library to present an up-to-the minute icon of popular culture. The evening demonstrated that in the 21st centruy, public libraries embrace all kinds of culture, including culture that exists just to entertain.
Coming soon...the Rockville Centre School Channel Broadcast of this event. Check listings at http://www.rvcschools.org/education/dept/dept.php?sectionid=19
On Monday, our book discussion group met to discuss the LI READS 2007 book, The Color of Water: a black man's tribute to his white mother by James McBride. As you can imagine, any book that deals with race, religion, prejudice, poverty and parental abuse is sure to generate a lively, spirited discussion and that it did!
We welcomed a few new members to our group and it's nice to see patrons from the surrounding libraries (like Oceanside and Hewlett) join us. I hope everyone will participate next time for our Monday Mysteries Book Group on June 4th at noon. We will be reading and discussing The Body in the Library by Agatha Christie. Stop by the circulation desk to pick up your copy and join us to share your thoughts and opinions. Light refreshments will also be served!!

Everyone loves a homemade gift, especially mom! Let your creativity shine as you make a beautiful decoupage vase. Grade 3 and up are welcome to join us on Friday, May 4 @ 4pm
Keeping up with the world of communication...having information at your fingertips...staying in the know with news you choose - your Library is listening. We will highlight events in the Children's Centre, programs in Events, Etc., new book arrivals and discussions in Books..., and a SciFi/Fantasy Corner.
