Revised budget

The RVC Library Board revised its 2007/08 budget figures to reflect a 1.2% decrease in the original budget, from 6.1% to 4.8%, by increasing the estimated revenue line. Contractual salary and health insurance obligations represent the major portion of this year’s tax proposal. A family residing in a home with an adjusted market value of $900,000 can expect a rate increase of about $20 for the year.

Please vote on May 15th at South Side High School. The polls are open from 7 am to 9 pm.

May is Get Caught Reading Month

Get Caught Reading is a nationwide campaign to remind people of all ages how much fun it is to read. Although May is Get Caught Reading Month, the campaign is promoted throughout the year. It is supported by the Association of American Publishers (AAP). Launched in 1999, "Get Caught Reading" is the brainchild of former Congresswoman Pat Schroeder, President and Chief Executive Officer of AAP, the industry association representing book publishers. Ms. Schroeder saw the opportunity to spread the word about the joys of reading through an industry-supported literacy campaign.

Speaking of reading, have you signed up for Booknews, our newsletter subscription service that provides reading suggestions for adults, teens and children in 10 reading interest categories on a monthly basis? Coming Soon: The World of Frank Sinatra

sinatra1.jpg

On Sunday, May 20 at 2 pm, enter the wonderful world of Frank Sinatra with Dr. Stanislao G. Pugliese when he presents his popular lecture Longing, Loss and Nostalgia: Frank Sinatra and Italian American Culture.

There are almost as many Sinatras as our imaginations may will into existence: the wise-guy kid from the streets of Hoboken; the vulnerable crooner who made the bobby soxers swoon at the Paramount; the self-destructive moth to the flame of Ava Gardner; the eternal Maggio and the Comeback Kid; the head Rat with rock glass in hand; the original "gangsta" epitomizing cool and a certain way with women; the the ferociously proud Italian American; the Chairman of the Board; Ol' Blue Eyes; civil rights spokesperson. In short, Sinatra was the platform upon which much of American culture was written in the second half of the twentieth century.

Dr. Pugliese is professor of history at Hofstra University and the author, editor or translator of a dozen books on Italian American History. He is a former fellow at Columbia University, the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., and Cambridge University.
