Check out this new PG-13 Horror film movie....The Gate!

I think the picture says it all, but if you want to read the whole post check out Entertainment Weekly's book blog: Shelf Life. This was a response to the movie version of Where the Wild Things Are being more for adults then kids.

Actually, we mean books about zombies.
To get you in the spirit of Halloween (this Saturday), we recommend the following scary, creepy and ghoulish books:
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith
World War Z: an oral history of the zombie war by Max Brooks
The Zombie Survival Guide: complete protection from the living dead by Max Brooks
If you are interested in more information about the 'zombie craze', check out these articles on the NPR website: Rules of the Undead:Zombies Invade Bookstore and Zombies: Still Undead and Suddenly Everywhere

You can expect to see another teen series getting some attention soon -- Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard -- is heading to the small screen. Rumor has it is the show will air on ABC Family.

What a great short lived sci/fi tv series....that we have here at rvc library!

Another librarian (thanks Amy) sent me this link to a NYT article about a CT woman who is reading a book a day for a year. She started this streak on her birthday last October so she only has another week or so to go. I don't know about you, but when I get a chance to read two books a week I think I'm doing really well.
Check out her blog for books that she says can be read in a day. And please, try to refrain from comments about who cares for her children, etc. while she sits around reading all day long ...
Just last year we said goodbye to American Girl doll, Samantha. Our favorite brunette from 1904 has been relegated to the American Girl archives and now the same fate is in store for Kirsten. A pioneer girl living in Minnesota and of Swedish heritage, the most iconic image of Kirsten shows her wearing two blond braids looped on either side of her head and wearing a white dress with a red sash and a wreath of greenery in her hair to celebrate St. Lucia's Day. Perhaps its a pre-holiday marketing ploy, but I am excited at the possibility of a new historical American Girl doll coming in the spring to replace Kirsten, just as Rebecca was introduced in May 2009 as the first Jewish American Girl doll.

The popular teen series Cirque Du Freak comes to the big screen next Friday (the 23rd) with The Vampire's Assistant (based on the first book in the series). Check out the trailer

The Nobel Prize for Literature and the Man Booker Prize for fiction were both awarded to women last week. Herta Müller won the Nobel for Literature and Hilary Mantel won the Booker Prize.
Mueller, whose Nobel was seen as a nod to the 20th anniversary of communism's collapse, was persecuted in her native Romania for her critical depiction of life behind the Iron Curtain. Her body of work includes the novels The Appointment, The Land of Green Plums and Traveling on One Leg.
Hilary Mantel won the 41st annual Man Booker prize last Tuesday for Wolf Hall, a historical novel about Henry VIII’s court centered on the king’s adviser, Thomas Cromwell.
Congratulations ladies!!

Fourth Realm Trilogy's third book is out. I can't wait to read it and find out what's going to happen with the Traveler. The Golden City
It's official, 11-year-old Zachary Gordon has been cast to play everyone's favorite wimp - Greg Heffley. Poor Zachary even had to get Greg's "haircut" -- with three pieces sticking up in the back. Fans of the TV show Ni Hao Kai-lan might recognize Zachary's voice, he voices San San. Here's what this young actor has to say about playing an anti-hero: "Everybody has Greg inside him. Their worst parts are him. That's how they relate to him, and he also has a little bit of a conscience. In some ways." Veteran actor Steve Zahn will be playing Greg's father, Frank. Diary of a Wimpy Kid the movie is due out April 2, 2010.

One of my favorite teen books of the year so far has been Going Bovine by Libba Bray. In the story, Cameron Smith, a sixteen year-old who has recently been diagnosed with Mad Cow disease, sets off on a road trip with a death-obsessed video gaming dwarf he meets in the hospital in an attempt to find a cure. It's a crazy adventure involving talking garden gnomes, giant fire flames and an enormous Cadillac.
For a good laugh, check out the author's promo for the book ">here

October is a great month for reading. The days are getting shorter and there is nothing quite like a nice cup of tea (or a glass of wine if you are so inclined), a warm blanket and a great book. The following are just a sample of books that are due out this month:
The Wild Things by Dave Eggers
Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls (author of The Glass Castle)
Manhood for Amateurs by Michael Chabon
Pursuit of Honor by Vince Flynn
Dragons by Michael Connolly
SuperFreakonomics by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner
What the Dog Saw by Malcolm Gladwell
Last Night in Twisted River by John Irving
Reserve your copy now either in person, by phone or on-line and wait for a nice cool, crisp day to curl up with these just-released books.
P.S. ~ Tomorrow the Nobel Prize for Literature will be announced ... stay tuned for the results.

Here's the news.....V the old sci/fi show about alien visitors is back on tv. They are doing a remake of the tv series. Can we come up with anything new in sci/fi?
Have you seen us at your Back-to-School Nights? For the first time the Rockville Centre Public Library is sending representatives to the Back-to-School Nights at all the public schools to offer information to parents and teachers about our great programs and applying for a library card. It's been a great success and we are planning to be back again next year. So see you in September!

While she may not be on The Hills anymore, Lauren Conrad isn't exactly moping. Her recent book, L.A. Candy, which seems more like an autobiography and less like a work of fiction, has been at the top of The New York Times best seller list for weeks. With 2 follow up books in the works, it has just been announced that L.A. Candy will be made into a movie. How the movie will be different from The Hills remains to be seen.
