The Elmont Memorial Library is a Family Place Library . This means that we have joined other libraries on Long Island and nationwide that offer resources to promote early literacy – the idea that literacy begins at birth, that children prepare to read and acquire reading skills long before they start school – and that one of the roles of the public library is to help build healthy communities and healthy families.
With this philosophy in mind, we offer programs and storytimes for all age groups, beginning with our Parent/Infant Play and Movement Program for newborn babies to Afternoon Adventures and Reading Book Clubs for students in grades K – 6. There is always a calendar of events available at the Children’s Room desk, or you may call the Children’s Room at 354-5280, ext. 207 for more information. |

The Elmont Library’s Parent- Child Interaction Castle is a special place
The Castle, located in the Children’s Room, has been established as a setting specifically for children under the age of 5 years to meet and play with other children and, even more importantly, to play with a parent and/or adult caregiver.

Research shows that parent/child interaction is just one of many pathways that help a child develop social skills –skills like sharing, taking turns, listening to others’ opinions, respecting the rights of others –skills that everyone needs to interact and communicate with others. For this reason, please remember to turn off your cell phone while you are playing in the Castle (and throughout the library).
The Castle is filled with age-appropriate board books, puzzles, and toys that encourage sharing and creative play.
Play is so important to optimal child development that it has been recognized by the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights as a right of every child!
Please remember to observe the rules of the Castle:
Sign in at the Children’s Room desk.
No child under the age of 5 is permitted in the Castle.
Adult must stay with the child at all times.
Please don’t talk on your cell phones or use your laptop.
Please clean up before you leave.
