ALL WORKSHOPS ARE FOR TEENS GRADES 7-12

For all teens programs and activities:

  • Register in person at the YA Desk or by phone
  • To register for a program, please have your Elmont Public Library card handy
  • Registration for each program begins 3-4 weeks before the program’s date
  • Priority is given to Elmont residents and cardholders
  • No fees

TEEN BABYSITTING WORKSHOP
Grades 7-12 only!

Register for our annual babysitting workshop!
A series of three sessions is being held on October 1, 8 & 15.
Topics include basic child care, minor first aid, entertaining children and handling emergency situations.
All those completing the course will receive certificates.
For more information please call YA Services at 354-5280, Ext. 247.
Registered participants: please be present at the time the program is scheduled to begin. We regret that after that time, your place may be given to those on the waiting list.

Thursday, October 1, 6:30-8:30 pm
TEEN BABYSITTING WORKSHOP I: BASIC CHILD CARE AND FIRST AIDE BASICS
Registered Nurses JoAnne Tanck and Georgette Basso of the Neo-Natal Unit at Winthrop University Hospital will demonstrate feeding, washing, changing and bedtime techniques, as well as general tips and responsibilities of babysitting.
PARTICIPANTS MUST BRING THEIR OWN DOLL OR A STUFFED ANIMAL!

BABYSITTING WORKSHOP II: HOW TO ENTERTAIN SMALL CHILDREN
Storyteller/musician and former teacher Dara Linthwaite will demonstrate storytelling, games, simple crafts, songs, and finger plays.

Thursday, October 15, 6:30-7:30 pm
BABYSITTING WORKSHOP III: HANDLING EMERGENCY SITUATIONS
Representatives of the local Police and Fire Departments will discuss emergency situations that could require their help.

SKATEBOARD ART DESIGN workshop for teens
Look at the current trends in skateboard art and use these themes to create your own skateboard shaped wall art. Express your own unique style using markers and foam core. Bold graphic, bright color and attention to composition will be encouraged!

TEEN READ WEEK October 18-24
The Elmont Public Library, in conjunction with the American Library Association, invites you to celebrate “Teen Read Week” (October 18-24). “Read Beyond Reality @ Your Library” is the theme of this year’s national initiative to encourage teens to read something out this world, just for the fun of it. Free bookmarks and reading lists just for teens will be available all week at YA Services.

TEEN FINE FIX
Got fines? Can’t use your library card? If you are a teen (grades 7-12) with a library fine, visit the Library during “Teen Read Week” and have your overdue fines flushed.
Teens can pick up a coupon at the YA Desk.
Limit one coupon per patron; given up to a limit of $10.
Replacement of lost library materials is not eligible under the coupon.

TEEN READ GUESS JAR
Use your math skills or a lucky guess, to figure out how much “stuff” we’ve got in the Teen Read Guess Jar! We’ve filled up a jar with treats and things and it is your mission to guess how much stuff we’ve got packed in there. The winner will receive the contents of the jar!

Magic workshop for teens

Is it real…or is it magic? Learn how to perform a variety of unique magic tricks in this just for teens workshop!

Saturday, October 24, 2:00-3:30pm
GAMES, MUSIC & PIZZA!
Grades 7-12
Join us to celebrate the end of Teen Read Week. Bring your own music (we’ll provide the player), enjoy some board games, take a turn playing Wii or PS II, snack on pizza and participate in the final prize drawing!
Don’t forget to bring your friends!

TEEN BOOK CLUB w/ KELLY
Join our Teen Book Club! The group meets once a month (usually the last Wednesday of a month). Refreshments provided.
