Three New Databases Added July 1, 2007
The library has subscribed to Auto Repair Reference Center, Facts for Learning and Home Improvement Reference Center.
Auto Repair Reference Center contains information on most major manufacturers of domestic and imported vehicles, with repair information for most vintage makes starting as far back as 1945.
Facts for Learning fills general study, research, and reference needs for students in grades 2-8 and the professionals and parents who work with them.
Home Improvement Reference Center is an online tool for home improvement assistance, including: maintenance, remodeling, electrical work, plumbing, wood projects, outdoor improvements, decorating home & garden, etc.
All three resources can be accessed from home through the Research Databases section of the web site.
Playaway Digital Audiobooks
What is smaller than a bread box and more exciting than Playstation 3? What's smaller than a book on CD with all the fine sound quality of the best audiobooks? The answer to all of the above is East Meadow Public Library’s brand new Playaways!
Playaways are the first pre-loaded digital audiobook already formatted and ready to play. These fabulous little audiobooks are now available without the hassle and worry of downloading the book onto your own MP3 device.
Each Playaway is preloaded with one audiobook.
You don’t need to have access to a computer in order to use our Playaways. Just put in your earphones and turn it on. The list of available books is small but growing. The sound quality is excellent. The listening is very enjoyable.
Look for the orange and red display case in Media with the Playaway sign and ask us at Media to give you a demonstration.
TRY IT, YOU’LL LIKE IT!
NetLibrary eAudiobooks
Downloadable eAudiobooks from NetLibrary and Recorded Books are digital versions of audiobooks that are available through the internet. You can listen to downloaded titles on any desktop or portable computer that supports Windows Media Player version 9 and above. You may also transfer your favorite titles to a wide range of portable devices such as MP3 players, media centers, Pocket PCs, and even select smartphone devices. Sorry but iPods are NOT supported.
The East Meadow Public Library is pleased to offer wireless Internet access to our patrons. Simply bring your wireless-enabled laptop computer or other device to the Library, turn it on, and go. There is no charge to use the service and the best part is there is no waiting for an available PC! In order to connect, your computer must have a Wi-Fi®-compatible network card installed (802.11a, 802.11b, or 802.11g). You'll find that signal strength is best on the West side of the building (the seating areas behind the Reference Desk). You must launch your browser and accept the Library’s Policy on Public Use of the Internet before attempting to utilize the connection.
Many children and young adults come to the library after school to work on their homework and school projects. Now they can receive help from real, live tutors via the Internet! East Meadow Public Library is offering an exciting new program for 4th - 12th grade students called Live Homework Help.
Available every day from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., this service connects students to a real live tutor for up to 20 minutes of one-on-one help. Children and young adults simply click on the link above, enter their grade level and the subject they need help in, and they are instantly connected to an expert tutor. Students can receive help in math, science, social studies or English.
