News

The Farmingdale Public Library is Revamping to Serve You Better

Your library will be undergoing an exciting renovation of interior spaces beginning in November 2009. The main floor project will be completed in April 2010. The lower level meeting room project will be completed by July 2010.

Here's what we're upgrading:

Improving Access to the Building

  • Side Entrance will be built providing for easier access to the building from the parking lot.

  • Front Entrance will have a weather-protection overhang installed.

Repurposing Existing Space

  • New Children's Library will be located on the North side of the main floor to provide more space for print materials, an interactive play area, parent seating, a storytelling square, computers, and technology.

  • Teen Scene, for children in Grade 6 and up, will have mobile technologies, flexible seating, the Young Adult Fiction collection, gaming computers, Smart technology, and collaborative workspaces.

  • Media Center will contain the DVD , CD, Book-on-CD collections and Download Depot to access the library's collection of iTunes and OverDrive downloadable audio books and eBooks.

  • Grand Reading and Work Area will be located down the main aisle with tables and seating for reading and research.

  • Bookstore shelving to make it easier for you to find materials.

  • New Reading Room will have comfortable seating and will be located near the New Fiction, New Releases, and current magazines.

  • Art will be displayed on the new walls created by the areas listed above in addition to the Gallery on the lower level.

  • Cafe vending machines and seating in the rotunda to provide snacks or beverages.

Improving Technology

  • Additional computers for patrons to access the Library's online databases, search the Web, and complete assignments and projects.

  • Dedicated space for our DVD , CD, and Book-on-CD collections and a place for new technologies required for downloadable content.

  • Plug-n-play worktables with electrical outlets built in and ready for laptop or other mobile device use.

Making Staff Space Public Space

Rearranging and condensing back office staff space provides dedicated areas for:

  • Senior Connections, an information and referral service for senior citizens, where seniors talk to informed senior volunteers to obtain information, gain knowledge about timely topics, or inquire about money-saving government programs.

  • Career Counseling Center, for private, one-on-one assistance from our professional career counselor. You can access career materials, learn how to write a resume, perform a job search, and complete online job applications.

  • Small Meeting Room space for book discussion groups and small group meetings.

Installing a Self-Service Machine

  • Self-Check  will be available in the Children's Library. Your library has been selected to be a pilot sight for self-check and radio frequency identification (RFID). These technologies will be introduced in the new Children's Library and will allow you to check out your materials in privacy and without waiting on line.

Creating a Reading Garden to Use Outdoor Space

  • Reading Garden will contain indigenous plants and solar lanterns so you can enjoy a beautiful space throughout the year.

  • The garden will have access from the Children's Library and Adult stacks for everyone to use.

Updating the Building

  • Bathrooms will be updated.

  • Family Bathroom will be built to allow for parents to accompany their child to the restroom and seniors to be assisted by aides

  • Meeting Rooms will be updated with energy efficient lighting, new paint, and new ceiling tiles.

  • Stage Lighting, spotlights and track lighting will be installed for performances, speakers, and programs.

  • Projectors and A/V equipment will be installed in the larger meeting rooms.

  • Air conditioning and heating system will be balanced to provide optimum efficiency and comfort. Modifications to HVAC ductwork will be made to meet the needs of new spaces.

  • Carpeting will be replaced in current locations.

  • Tile in rotunda will be fixed.

What Will Happen During the Renovation Project?

  • A Temporary Library will be established in the Library’s lower level meeting rooms and gallery. There, you'll find the circulation desk; the reference desk; the children's library; public-use computers; and popular books, DVDs, CDs, and magazines. Library programs will continue as well. The main floor of the Library will be closed to the public.

  • THE LIBRARY WILL BE CLOSED BRIEFLY TO MOVE TO THE LOWER LEVEL TEMPORARY LIBRARY AND THEN WILL REOPEN TO SERVE YOU.

  • Call Ahead Pick Up. Call us before you come to the Library to request a book, DVD, CD, or Book-on-CD. If the item is available, they will be put aside for one hour for you to pick up.

Call the library at 516-249-9090 or access our website at http://www.farmingdalelibrary.org for information related to the renovation.
