Launched in 1943 the USS Intrepid served the United States Navy for 31 years.
This Essex Class carrier was one of America's most effective military vessels
along with her 23 sister ships. The Intrepid formed the backbone of the United
States Navy and its commitment to peace and freedom. Destined to be scrapped
in the 1970, a campaign led by the Intrepid Museum Foundation saved the Intrepid
Museum Foundation saved the Intrepid and subsequently, the Museum opened as
a symbol of peace and education in August 1982. In 1986, the ship was officially

Places, is the former home of John S. Phipps, his wife, Margarita Grace Phipps,
