VETERANS DAY SERVICES
Veterans Day Services will be held at the Freeport Memorial Library on Wednesday, November 11 at 10:15 a.m.
The guest speaker will be Pat Yngstrom, Deputy Director of the Nassau County Veterans Services. The program will honor POW/MIA’s and the designer of the POW/MIA flag, Newt Heisley. This iconic flag is displayed at the White House, the U.S. Capitol, and other federal buildings on national observances including Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. Mr. Heisley died in 2009 at the age of 88.

Dr. Malamud will present the final two sessions of his
three-part lecture/video series, “Small Countries, Big Music.” During November he will discuss the composers and performers of Spain including the music of Rodrigo, de Falla, and others. In December he will discuss composers and performers of Poland featuring the music of Chopin, Wieniawski, and others.

Anna Tonna, a Fulbright Scholar, has completed a thorough review of the twentieth-century Spanish song repertoire. She will be singing a variety of songs by composers of Puerto Rico. Accompanying her will be Daniel Daroca,who has given recitals and master classes in Europe, Asia, and the United States.

David Burgess is recognized as one of today’s outstanding guitarists. Through his extensive travels in Spain and Latin America, he has mastered many traditional Spanish guitar styles, and extended the limits of the guitar repertoire.

Show award for the Long Island Arts Council Juried Photography Exhibit 2009, uses diverse images and various digital techniques to capture the
essential design elements in everyday sights and articles of daily life. His images challenge the viewer to find the original subject that sparked his imagination.

Janet McLaughlin began her sewing career as a child making her own clothes. Later she moved to making her own curtains and bedspreads,
and finally on a whim, tried quilting. She enjoyed it so much that she joined the Long Island Quilters Society. Ms. McLaughlin will display quilts that she has made.

Islamic Art

A docent from the Metropolitan Museum of Art will explore the history of Islamic art and its relation to the religion of Islam. Islamic art rarely uses human or animal figures, but expresses itself through geometric, arabesque, floral, and calligraphic forms. The Met has an extensive collection of Islamic art that reflects the great diversity and range of the Islamic culture.
