About the Library - History

 

Highlights in the Library's History

  • 1937 - Franklin Square Free Library Association formed.
  • 1939 - Franklin Square Public Library chartered by New York State.
  • 1945 - Library moved from temporary quarters in Monroe St. School to storefront location on New Hyde Park Road.
  • 1957 - New building on Lincoln Road completed and dedicated.
  • 1964 - Small meeting room addition built.
  • 1973 - A vote to expand the library was defeated.
  • 1974 - Renovation to accommodate the handicapped.
  • 1994 - Interior renovation to provide for computers and other new services.
  • 1996 - Library purchases two adjoining properties for library expansion. $4,500,000 expansion bond vote defeated.
  • 1998 - A smaller, revised expansion bond of $2,240,000 passed overwhelmingly.
  • 2000 - Groundbreaking for the new library.
  • 2002 - Completion and dedication of expanded Franklin Square Public Library.
  • 2007 - Franklin Square Public Library celebrates its 50th anniversary at Lincoln Road location.
