CHILDREN’S CORNER

 

STORY TIME

2-year-olds Thursdays at 10:30 AM

3-year-olds Wednesday at 10:00 AM, 11:30 AM or 1:30 PM

4-year-olds Thursdays at 1:30 PM

Fall storytime runs from October 15 to November 20.

The two-year-old class is limited to 20 children and their caregivers.  All other classes are limited to 25.  Registration begins on Wednesday, October 1 at 10:00 am.  Please register in person at the library.

STORY CRAFT

Story craft is held on Saturdays at 2:00 PM for ages 3-5.  Each class is limited to 25.  Registration begins at 10:00 AM.  Please register in person at the library.

HALLOWEEN HOUSE

Monday, October 27   Grades K-2

Decorate your house with spooky stickers.  Registration begins on Tuesday, October 7.

3-D HALLOWEEN HOUSE

Tuesday, October 28   Grades 3-6

Construct a foam house and decorate it.  Registration begins on Tuesday, October 7.

PILGRIM PLATES

Monday, November 17   Grades K-2

Celebrate the holiday by making a Pilgrim girl or boy.  Registration begins on Monday, November 10.

THANKSGIVING FIGURES

Tuesday, November 18   Grades 3-6

Paint a pair of ceramic figures.  You have a choice of pilgrims, turkeys or Native Americans.  Registration begins on Monday, November 10.

SNOWMAN THERMOMETERS

Wednesday, January 27   Grades K-2

Get ready for cold weather by making a form snowman thermometer.  Registration begins on Monday, January 12.

SNOWMAN SUNCATCHERS

Thursday, January 28   Grades 3-6

Use stained glass gel to create snowman suncatchers.  Registration begins on Monday, January 12.

ONCE UPON A TIME…BOOK DISCUSSION

Fridays, September 26, October 24, November 14 and December 19 at 4:00 PM.

Dragons...princesses…magic beanstalks…knights in shining armor…a big, bad wolf…

Fairytales are magical. We will be reading fairytales from around the world and talking about them. There will also be fun activities related to the books read. Books for our first meeting will be available at the Children’s Reference Desk beginning September 12.

HALLOWEEN BOOOO- INGO

Wednesday, October 29   All ages.

Right in front of you are Frankenstein, a witch, a vampire and a werewolf, so SCREAM BINGO! Your favorite bingo game is back, so register October 6 and come play. Wear a costume and enter to win our “Best Costume” prize too!

MATTER OF FACT

Tuesday, November 4 at 4:00 PM   Grades K-5

Mad Science will teach children about solids, liquids and gases through various experiments.   Class limited to 20.  Registration begins on Tuesday, October 7.

A BRILLIANT HARRY POTTER PROGRAM

Saturday, November 22 at 2:00 PM   Grades 3-6

It’s bloody rotten! The sixth Harry Potter movie has been postponed until July! But don’t be too upset, maybe this program can console you a bit. There will be a  Marauder’s Map scavenger hunt; Diagon Alley raffles; and a best Harry Potter character costume contest. Registration begins October 27.

TIME FOR KIDS

Tuesdays, November 25, December 2 and 9 at 10:30 AM, ages 10 months – 5 years.

Donna Green is back for another series of interactive workshops using music, games, stories and crafts.  Please plan on attending all three classes.  Registration begins on Monday, November 10 at 10:00 AM.  The class limit is 20.

WINTERTIME MOTHER-DAUGHTER CRAFT

Wednesday, December 3 at 7:00 PM

Come out of the cold and spend a wintry evening together having fun. Mothers and daughters will each make seasonal craft. A hot glue gun is necessary; $2 materials fee.  Registration begins November 3.

HOLIDAY CRAFT DAY

Wednesday, December 17 10:00 AM – 4:45 PM.  All ages.

Come to our traditional holiday craft day.  We have enough variety that every one can make something.  This is a free program with no pre-registration.

SNOWFLAKES ARE FLYING

Saturday, December 20 at 2:00 PM.  Ages 3-5

It will be snowing in the library, but we won’t need a snowplow. Children, ages 3-5, can come to this snowy program where there will be games, crafts and lots of snowballs! Registration begins December 1 and there’s a materials fee of $1.00.

SPIRIT OF INVENTION

Friday, January 9 at 4:00 PM Grades K-3

The Long Island Children’s Museum will show children some unusual inventions, then everyone will create a futuristic invention.  Class limit is 25.  Registration begins on Monday, January 12 at 10:00 AM.

A FAMILY THANKSGIVING SCAVENGER HUNT

Are you a kid who loves scavenger hunts and winning prizes? Well, then, grab someone from your family, stop by the

Children’s Reference Desk to pick up your scavenger hunt sheet and work as a team to complete it! All teams who return a correctly completed form will be entered in a drawing to win a gift certificate! The hunt begins November 3 and a winning team will be chosen November 24.

MOMMY & ME ART CLASSES

EXTREME PUFFY PAINT

Tuesday, September 23 at 10:30 AM   Ages 2-5

Painting is always fun…but using puffy paint is really fun!

Jina Papadoniou shows you how to make this special paint and create a “puffy” masterpiece. Registration begins September 3 (Wednesday) and there is a materials fee of $1.00.

HALLOWEEN SHADOW COLLAGE

Tuesday, October 28 at 10:30 AM   Ages 3-5

Black cats…bats…a witch or two…what’s hidden in your shadow? Jina Papadoniou helps children make a halloween shadow of themselves at this special  holiday art class! Registration begins October 1, the materials fee is $1.00.

THE ALCHEMIST’S KITCHEN
Wednesday, October 1 7:00-8:00 PM
Science or magic? What makes pastry puff? Why are crystals so important to a cook? We will explore the chemistry behind the culinary arts. We will make ambrosia, the “food of the gods”! Bring your science & culinary questions! This class is free for ‘tweens and teens.
Registration begins September 17th.

POTIONS: THE KITCHEN WIZARDS
Monday, October 27 7:00-8:00 PM
For all Harry Potter & Halloween fantasy fans, we will create
Magical herbal wands while we imbibe in a bubbling brew of our own creation and nibble on chocolate fondue frogs!
This class is free for ages 11years+. Registration begins October 8th.

COMPUTER ANIMATION CLASS

The kitchen becomes a laboratory when we explore the world of forensics. We will extract DNA from pea soup, dust for fingerprints and create invisible ink! Registration begins November 3rd. This class is free for teens and ‘tweens.-

HOLIDAY CANDY VILLAGE
Monday, December 15 7:00-8:00 PM
Join Rona Madri in creating a special holiday village piece made entirely of goodies via your creative hands! Be inspired to make your own village of sweet buildings! This program is free for tweens and teens. Registration begins December 1st.
