Food and beverages are not permitted in the Computer Lab - or anywhere else outside the café area. These are public computers used by many people. Crumbs and liquids may damage the equipment; and sticky, gummy keyboards, mice, and tabletops create an unpleasant, unsanitary environment for the next user. Please be considerate.

Laptop and tablet computers are not permitted in the Computer Lab. If you need to access a file on your laptop, please save it to a disk or USB drive and then log into one of the PCs in the Computer Lab.

Article 245.11 of the New York State Penal Law prohibits “public display of offensive sexual material” on a “viewing screen.” Please remember that the Library is a public place. The Library may rescind your computer privileges for illegal activity.

The Library does not provide access to MySpace and similar social-networking websites.

We have begun adding new computers in the Computer Lab. Eventually, we will have about 20 machines in all. At that point, we will replace the original 10. The new computers have Windows Vista and Office 2007 (Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher, and Word) Installed. We are phasing out Lotus 1-2-3, so it will not appear on the new hardware.

To prevent errors when printing from Adobe Reader, do not start a second print job until all pages of the first job have left the printer.

Remember to click the "End Session" button in the "Personal Session Timer" window when you leave. Please do not turn off the computer. Leave the computer on for the next user.

If you save your work in the "Temp" folder, do not expect to find it there the next time you use the computer. The computers are configured to erase all user files on restart. Bear in mind that for the length of time that the file is there, it is available to the next user.

The Library no longer sells diskettes (so-called floppy disks); at the Circulation Desk; however, we are happy to give away the used ones that we have, which have been erased. There are of, course, no guarantees, and any disk can fail at any time - and eventually will. Note that if you buy a new disk that turns out to be defective, the manufacturer will gladly replace the disk, but they take no responsibility for your files.

The Library sells 128 Mb USB flash drives (sometimes called thumb drives or keychain drives) for $5.00 - our cost - at the Circulation Desk. These devices store about 85 times the capacity of a floppy disk, save and retrieve the data more quickly, and are less subject wear and tear.

The maximum number of pages that any user may print in one day is 25 pages, regardless of the computer used or the amount of money in the user's account.

Always preview your document before printing. In Internet Explorer, click on "File," then click on "Print preview" in the drop-down menu.

If you are printing multiple copies of a document, always print a single proof copy first. After you have checked the content and format for errors, then print the rest of your copies.

Instruction sheets on the door to the Computer Room cover such topics as printing and saving files. To avoid frustration, data loss, and unnecessary printing charges, we recommend that you follow the instructions carefully.

Self-paced instruction is available online with Learning Express Library's Computer Skills Tutorials. This online service includes instruction in Microsoft Excel, Internet Explorer, Powerpoint, and Word. Each course is divided into three modules: “Fundamentals,” “Intermediate,” and “Advanced.” If you are a new user, you will need to set up a free personal account so that you can track your progress and pick up where you left off on your next visit. We recommend that you use your library-card number as your username.

When you log into the SAM interface, you begin a one hour session. Each user is entitled to a total of three hours of computer use each day. At the end of the hour, if you have not used up three hours and if the utilization of the Computer Room is below 80%, your session should be extended automatically for another hour. From time to time, this feature fails to kick in, so make sure that you always heed the end-of-session warnings, save your work, and log out of your email account before your session ends.

Your session will time out after five minutes of inactivity. If you have to leave the computer, click on the "Lock PC" button in the "Personal Session Timer" window. (Look for the clock on the task bar at the bottom of the screen.) That way, your session will remain active until your hour is up, and your privacy will be protected.
