| Welcome to the Young Adult Department! This section of the Library specifically services students in grades 6-12. Here you will find a large selection of books, audiobooks (cassette, CD, and digital), college catalogs, magazines, and computers with varied resources. The Young Adult Librarian provides young adults with reader's advisory and help with school assignments, advocates for their needs and interests, and offers a wide range of recreational programs generously funded by the Friends of the Garden City Public Library. | Books! Both hardcover and paperbacks abound with various genres displayed. Mystery, fantasy, science fiction, classics, historical fiction, biography, horror, college, careers, test preparation, nonfiction, short stories, and new hardcover fiction are separated to facilitate locating the books of your choice. (See our "Good Books for Young Adults" page for some recommendations.) We also have a large reference area and YA professional collection. | |

| Electronic Information Resources! The computers in the YA Department are part of a local-area network providing varied electronic information sources to assist students and parents in school assignments. (See also our selection of websites for the college bound.) | |
Programs!* During the school year, the majority of Young Adult programs are held on Saturday afternoons. Craft programs and workshops are particularly popular. Other programs held during the week are the "Babysitting Workshop" and the "College Financial Aid Workshop." Dates and times for these programs are announced in the Garden City News, the Garden City Life, the Library's Newsletter, Calendar of Events, and fliers found on the YA Librarian's Desk. Every summer, the Young Adult Department, in cooperation with the Garden City Recreation Department, conducts "Teens and Tots Storytime" on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons at the Garden City Pool. Storytimes are held in the picnic area at 2:00 p.m., beginning July 1 and ending August 6. Young adults read, sing, and do finger plays and a simple craft with groups of children between the ages of 2 and 8. Tots look forward to that quiet time when Teens do storytime with them. Children canʼt wait until they are old enough to read to the Tots. To insure the quality of the storytimes and the comfort of the storytellers, volunteers are required to attend two training sessions prior to the first summer they participate. Anyone entering grades 6-12 in September 2008 is invited to join. If this is the first summer you are eligible or available, please consider volunteering. | “Metamorphosis” Summer Reading Club Register beginning Monday, June 16. Read books, win raffle prizes, try your luck/skill at the "Teen Guessing Game," solve puzzles, participate in the special programs, and get an invitation to the “Back To School Bash.” Look for the flyer for details and requirements. |

Any Young Adult program requiring registration is for Garden City Public Library cardholders in grades 6-12 only.
