The Adult Services Division of the Glen Cove Public Library offers a wide range of services and programs to meet the needs of the adult learner in the community. The reference librarians provide assistance to the patron in retrieving information from book and electronic sources. On-line  searching over the Internet is available for our subscription databases  including EBSCO, InfoTrac,  UMI ProQuest Direct, GaleNet, Reference USA, Heritage Quest as well as the automotive service product AllData.
  The Reference collection maintains special business and finance sources, including Dun and Bradstreet, Moody's, and Value Line Investment Services . Other special collections include our Career Development Center which offers books and periodicals on vocational opportunities, resume writing, and other important career related skills, and our media collection of compact discs, audio books and videos.      
         Adult Services also sponsors bus trips, book discussions, special lectures and hands-on arts and crafts workshops to satisfy the adult learner's educational needs.

Everybody enjoys surfing the Web for information, but most of the industrial strength research and business databases are fee-based and very costly. Our Library subscribes to many of these high quality online databases that are available to our patrons without charge.

The Story Behind The Barbie Doll:
Ruth Handler and Mattel Inc.

Join us as we welcome Bernie Kivowitz to the Library to present the story of two amazing women and the company they helped to create - one is the Barbie Doll and the other is Barbie's creator and co-founder of Mattel Toys, Ruth Handler.  A former Mattel executive, employed by the company for over forty years, Mr. Kivowitz will discuss how the Barbie Doll is more than just a successful doll and how Ruth Handler's dedication and perseverance changed the toy and entertainment industry forever.  (After the program, be sure to look in the Lobby display cases where Lisa Denison's Barbie doll collection is on exhibit for the month of June.) 


Computer Kindergarten for Grownups
Presented by Sharper Training Solutions

Wednesday, June 9, 10am -
12 noon
This slow-paced, hands-on workshop is specially designed for first-time computer users.  Using IBM compatible computers, this unique class covers the basics in a way that even the most inexperienced user will understand.  We'll cover turning the computer on, the Windows desktop, using the mouse, opening programs, saving a file, and turning the computer off.  Registration for Glen Cove residents begins Wednesday, May 18 and Wednesday, May 25 for all others, space permitting.  The fee is $7 per person and is payable by check or money order at the time of registration.  Please make check or money order payable to: Sharper Training Solutions.

Not merely a coming-of-age story, Goldberg's first novel delicately examines the unraveling fabric of one family whose eleven year old daughter becomes an unexpected success as a champion speller.  Blending mysticism, mental illness and the bizarre subculture of spelling bees, Bee Season takes a poignant look at a family fighting for survival.Come join librarians Antonia Petrash and Carol Stern for a spirited discussion of this stark but poignant work.  Copies of the book are available through inter-library loan for Glen Cove patrons.


Computer Second Grade For Grown-Ups
Presented by Sharper Training Solutions

12 noon
This hands-on class covers more advanced computer topics including inputting, inserting, moving and erasing numbers.  Learn about spreadsheets and gain an understanding of basic techniques - creating a workbook, inputting and editing data, formulas and functions.  Due to the hands-on nature of this workshop, class size is limited.  A materials fee of $7 (payable by check or money order only at the time of registration) includes a useful manual and lifetime support through e-mail.  Registration is in person only at the Reference Desk and begins Monday, May 2 for

Summer Bus Trip to Ellis Island
With Lunch at Florio's

Join us for our Summer bus trip to
Ellis Island.  We will travel by deluxe motorcoach to New York City and take the ferry over to Ellis Island, passing by the spectacular Statue of Liberty, to enjoy a self-guided tour of the Island.  After the tour we'll travel to Little Italy and enjoy a delicious lunch at Florio's where you may select Chicken Marsala, Veal Parmagiana or Filet of Sole as the entree of your choice.  The cost of $65 includes all and is payable by check or money order at the time of registration.  Registration begins Wednesday, May 4 for Glen Cove residents and Wednesday, May 11 for all others, space permitting.  Please make checks or money orders payable to:  The Glen Cove Library Bus Trip Fund.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) Classes 


Monday and Wednesday Evenings, 6 to 9pm

These classes are presented by the Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES)  of Nassau County and  are free of charge, and open to anyone over 21 years of age wishing to improve his or her English language skills.

THE TOWNSEND DIARY 
NOW AVAILABLE !

Copies of Memorandum of a Jaunt:  Peter S. Townsend and the New York Lyceum of Natural History, May – June 1817 are available for sale in the Library, proceeds to benefit the Library's Gift Fund.  The book is the diary of twenty-two year old Peter Solomon Townsend of Oyster Bay in which he tells of his adventures during two scientific expeditions into southeastern New York State.  The expeditions were sanctioned by the Lyceum of Natural History, (which later became the Museum of Natural History), and were attempts to locate fossil bones, including a mastodon skeleton. Peter Townsend's diary includes invaluable descriptions of the area, but also communicates a sincere feeling of an exciting adventure.  Dr. Richard Harris of Webb Institute of Naval Architecture has edited the diary, and has written the introduction. Signed copies available.

FREE INTERNET ACCESS AVAILABLE  AT LIBRARY 

Glen Cove Public Library patrons have free access to the Internet 
from terminals within the Library 
.

Currently six PCs are dedicated exclusively to the Internet, 
offering full World Wide Web access through either Netscape or 
the Microsoft Explorer browsers.  Literally hundreds of thousands 
of Web sites can be reached in a matter of seconds over our high speed connections.  In addition, the Library subscribes to many information-packed databases, some available exclusively in the Library, and some available both in the Library and from your home computer.  Internet PC use is available to Glen Cove Library card holders, and limited access on one machine is available for holders of valid State Mandated Access Cards.
Internet machines are to be used for Internet browsing only.  Restrictions on certain file downloads are imposed by security software.  No e-mail accounts or individual web pages are to be hosted from public machines. Individual mail accounts can be obtained from various Web mail services which are hosted off site.   Printing is available at nominal cost.


Internet Policy

     All Glen Cove Public Library cardholders in good standing  are entitled to Internet access.  The Glen Cove Public Library is committed to make access available on an equitable basis.  The Glen Cove Public Library reserves the right to remove the privilege of anyone who tampers with or damages the equipment or programs involved with Internet access. 
The Glen Cove Public Library cannot be held responsible for the content, quality, currency or accuracy of data gathered from Internet sites accessed through the Library. Internet Web site creators are not regulated and thus are free to publish whatever material they choose, with the exception of copyrighted materials. As in the use of print media, users must obey United States Copyright and other applicable laws. 
The Glen Cove Public Library also cannot be held responsible for the Web site choice made by children. Parents, legal guardians or care givers are responsible for supervising their child's Internet use. Librarians are available to help children, if needed, but not to monitor what resources are utilized. 
Any damage caused to patron computers from downloaded computer viruses is not the responsibility of the Glen Cove Public Library. Users should install virus checking software onto their home computers in order to prevent computer damage from information downloaded off of the Internet.
        Finally, the Glen Cove Public Library cannot be held responsible for any loss of privacy, fees incurred, and/or personal harm caused to patrons due to disclosing of personal information over the Internet. Users are warned not to give their names, telephone numbers, addresses, credit card numbers, or any other personal information out over the Internet, since it is not known who is receiving it and for what purpose it is being used. Patrons should exercise extreme caution before arranging meetings with strangers they contact over the Internet.
