BOOK DISCUSSION: PROPERTY, BY VALERIE MARTIN
PRESENTED BY JOANNA CABO AND AMY GRETCHYN
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2PM

Set in the antebellum South during the racial unrest of the 1820's, Valerie Martin's novel, Property, is a compelling yet deeply disturbing story. Unique in its perspective, this story is told through the eyes of Manon Gaudet, the unhappy wife of a cruel sugar plantation owner who takes much of her resentment out on Sarah, her slave and her husband's unwilling mistress and the mother of his children. Winner of the 2003 Orange Prize for Fiction, Property examines how slavery affected owners as well as slaves and the similarities between the unhappy lives of white women in a man's world and the harsher cruelties of slavery. Join librarians Joanna Cabo and Amy Gretchyn as they lead a dynamic discussion of this riveting novel.
