Fun at the Library
November & December
2009

Please register in the Children's Room for all programs, and check for seating availability.
Registration for all Children’s Spring programs begins on Monday, November 2nd.
Preference is given to Glen Cove residents. Non-residents may register, space permitting.

As a courtesy to other families, please call the Children's Room at 676-2130 if your child/children cannot attend a program for which they are pre-registered. We often have a waiting list and would let these children fill your child's spot. Children on the waiting list may be admitted to a program ten - fifteen minutes after the program starts; registered late-comers may lose their space after this time.

STORYTIMES AT THE GLEN COVE LIBRARY

Storytimes are a wonderful way to introduce children to the library and the joy of books. The children’s librarians enjoy sharing this love of books with our young patrons through stories, music and simple literature based crafts
in our children’s room.

Fall storytime will begin the week of October 5th and runs through the week of November 23rd. Sign up begins the week of September 28th.

Please come into the Library or call the Children's Room to inquire about available space at any of our storytimes.

MOTHER GOOSE STORYTIME
AGES 18 MONTHS -30 MONTHS WITH ADULT
TUESDAYS @ 10:30AM

This half-hour of short books, nursery rhymes, finger plays and music is a wonderful introduction to the Library for our youngest patrons.

TODDLER STORYTIME
AGES 2 1/2 – 3 YEARS WITH ADULT
WEDNESDAYS OR THURSDAYS @ 10:30AM

Young children get a chance to listen to books, interact with flannel board stories, sing and dance to music
and create a simple craft in this half hour library program.

BOOKS ALIVE STORYTIME
AGES 4-6 YEARS
MONDAYS @ 4:15PM

Designed for our patrons with some school and library experience. Children meet in the community room for stories both fiction and non-fiction and participate in discussion and a literature related activity. Parents may wait upstairs in the Library. No siblings, please.


FAMILY HOLIDAY DANCE PARTY - WITH LEE KNIGHT
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2PM

Enjoy a high-energy family concert where children will interact as they sing and dance with singer-songwriter Lee Knight. Seasonal props including hats, canes, snowflakes and bells will enhance the fun! Line dance to “Let It Snow” and hip-hop to "Frosty The Snowman." “Feliz Navidad," “Dreidle Dreidle," and “All I Want For Christmas” are some of the songs included in this special show that will get everyone in the holiday spirit as they sing and dance with family and friends!

CHESS WITH THE LONG ISLAND CHESS NUTS
WEDNESDAYS, DECEMBER 2, 9 AND 16, 7PM

You're never too young to learn how to play chess. If you have never played chess before, you will learn the basics of this ancient and fascinating game. If you are already a chess player, learn new strategies and enjoy playing the game with others. Sign up early since seating is limited.

PLAY HOORAY

Come sing, dance and play with your little one. This 45-minute themed program will get you up and moving with nursery rhymes, books, music, dancing, parades and more. Space is limited, so please sign up early for these popular programs.

SNOWMAN FUN
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 17, 11AM

Join us to celebrate the start of the winter season! Listen to some winter stories and enjoy participating in snowmen fingerplays and rhymes. Then decorate your very own snowman to take home to hang in your special place.

School Age Activities

SNOWMAN ORNAMENT
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 15, 4PM

Using wooden sticks, foam and felt, create a cute snowman ornament that you can use to decorate your home or hang on your tree to help celebrate the holiday season.

CHILDREN'S DATABASES SEARCHABLE FROM HOME!
Did you know that children can access the Glen Cove Library's databases and obtain research information for school projects from their home computer? Search our Children's databases and find information on countries, animals, math, history, science experiments, sports, art and current events. To access the databases, go to the Glen Cove Library's homepage at www.glencovelibrary.org. Click on Children's Services and then click on Helpful Databases to view the list of available resources. Children's databases include Country Watch, EBSCOhost Web, Kids InfoBits, Kids Search, Searchasaurus, Student Research Center and TumbleBooks. To use these databases, you may need to enter your Library barcode number (2 1571 ______ ). We're sure you'll enjoy using these databases. If you have any questions about using the databases, please call the Children's Room at 676-2130.

VIEW YOUR LIBRARY ACCOUNT FROM HOME AND RENEW ITEMS!
To view your Library account from home, go to www.alisweb.org and click on the My Account link. Enter your name, your Library barcode number and your pin number (the last four digits of your telephone number). You can view a listing of items currently checked-out, renew items and see a listing of items you've requested.

REQUEST BOOKS FROM HOME!
Children (and their parents, too) can search the online catalog and request books from home or from any computer with Internet access. Visit the Library's homepage at www.glencovelibrary.org and click on Search the Catalog. Once you've located the book you want, click the Request tab. You'll need to enter your name, your Library barcode number and your pin number (the last four digits of your telephone number). Please note that not all items are available for request. If an item you selected is not available for request, a message will appear indicating that the selected item may not be requested. Please call the Children's Room at 676-2130 if you have any questions regarding requesting an item.
