OCTOBER

Spooky Tales around the Campfire – Join storyteller Elizabeth Rowe as she tells spooky Halloween tales. For children in grades K-8. Thursday, October 26 at 4:00 p.m.  Register in the Children’s Room.  Free.

Pumpkin Decorating – Join us on Halloween, Tuesday, October 31, at 4:00 p.m. to create an original decorated pumpkin.  Come in costume.  For children in grades K-6.  Register in the Children’s Room.  Free.

NOVEMBER

Children’s Book Week – Celebrate Children’s Book Week and Native American Month with James Bruchac, author and storyteller.  His stories recount Native American animal and trickster tales. Wednesday, November 15 at 4:00 p.m. For children in grades K-8. Register in the Children’s Room.  Free.

Thanksgiving Craft – Create a “Thankful Tom Turkey” banner to celebrate Thanksgiving. For children ages 4 through 12.  Tuesday, November 21 at 4:00 p.m. Register in the Children’s Room. Materials fee: $.50.

DECEMBER

Holiday Craft – Join us on Thursday, December 7 at 4:00 p.m. to make a beautiful and delicious candy wreath for the holidays.  For children in grades K-8.  Register in the Children’s Room. Materials fee: $.50.

Winter Craft - Welcome winter with a craft. For children ages 4 through 10.  Wednesday, December 20 at 4:00 p.m.  Register in the Children’s Room.  Materials fee: $.50.

On-going Programs

Toddler Time

Share stories, songs and finger plays and fun!  A program for children 18 months through 3 years accompanied by a caregiver.  Tuesdays at 11:00 a.m.  October 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 (come in costume); November 14, 21, 28; December 5, 12. Register in the Children’s Room.

Picture Book Time

Children ages 3 through 5 are invited to come to the Library for a program of stories, songs and more.  Must be accompanied by a caregiver.  Fridays at 11:00 a.m.  October 6, 13, 20, 27; November 3, 10, 17; December 1, 8, 15.  Register in the Children’s Room.

Bilingual Story Time

Join the fun for an English and Spanish story time on Saturdays at 11:15 a.m. Open to ages 3 to 6 years, accompanied by a caregiver. October 7, 14, 21, 28; November 11, 18, 25; December 2, 9, 16. Register in the Children’s Room.

Notice to Parents
We want to remind you that children under age 9 must be accompanied by an adult caregiver while in the
library. Please be aware of the library's hours so
that all children are picked up by closing time. Our
only alternative for the protection of children left
after closing is notifying the police. Please help
us help your children.

DRIVING CLASSES

The AARP DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE will be offered on Thursday, October 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Successful completion of this class will remove up to 4 points from your driving record, entitle you to an insurance discount, and make you a better driver. There is a fee of $10.00 per person payable at the time of registration, checks only payable to AARP. Hempstead Village residents may register starting on Tuesday, September 19, 2006. Non-residents may register beginning Monday, October 2. Class size is limited.  Bring lunch or a snack. The class will meet in the Community Room. Edible Fruit Arrangement Workshop

Join Acquillia A. Bailey for a fun Edible Fruit Arrangement Workshop. She will demonstrate how to make edible fruit arrangements. They are perfect for any occasion. There will be sample directions on how to make customized arrangements. The class will meet in the Community Room on Saturday, October 7. Registration required for this free program. Computer Kindergarten in Spanish
Presented by Western Suffolk BOCES
On Wednesday, October 11, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. come to this user friendly workshop for first-time computer users.  Overcome your fears and discover the wonders of computers in this slow-paced, hands-on workshop.  We will cover turning the computer on, the Windows desktop, using the mouse, opening programs, creating a letter, saving a file, and turning the computer off.  Bring your questions.  
$5.00 fee payable at the time of registration.

Venga a este taller de aprendizaje facil para los que usan una computadora por primera vez. Este taller se dara el miercoles 11 de octubre del 2006 de 6:30 p.m. a 8:30 p.m. Venza el miedo y descubra las maravillas que brindan los computadores de manera lenta y explicatiba en este taller. Durante esta secion usted iniciara una sesion de computador, aprendera a abrir las ventanas de la pantalla, usara el “Maus” (Mouse o “ratoncillo” como se llama en Ingles) inicira programas, creara un carta, la archivara y apagara el computador. Eco del Sur
On Saturday, October 14 at 2:30 p.m., this wonderful Latin musical ensemble will be performing in the Library. Eco Del Sur perform ancient and contemporary music from the Andean mountains and other Latin American Regions.

Scrapbooking Workshop

On Saturday, October 21, the Library welcomes Sue Bazaicalup for a scrapbooking workshop.  Learn the latest techniques for creating beautiful scrapbooks from your special photos.  Sue Bazaicalup will guide you in completing beautiful layouts for your photos.  Please bring 8-10 of your favorite photos to the workshop

Autumn Jazz in New York Concert

On Saturday, October 28 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., the Library will present jazz musician/composer, Cay Fatima’s program of Autumn Jazz in New York.  Cay is a passionate, energetic, jazz musician who enjoys playing piano, flute, guitar, bass, and percussion.
This free program will be held in the library’s Community Room.

NOVEMBER

Handmade Greeting Cards

On Saturday, November 4, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., please join us in creating beautiful handmade cards for the holidays.  Learn how to coordinate colors and paper textures for a finished card that someone will cherish.  All supplies will be provided.
This program will be held in the library’s Community Room. Registration required for this free program.

Incredible Edible Appetizers

On Saturday, November 11, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., come to the Library for a workshop on how to make incredible edible appetizers for the holidays.

Thanksgiving Side Dishes
On Saturday, November 18, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., come to this workshop and learn about side dishes, savory stuffing, inventive vegetables, and sweet dessert for the perfect ending to a great Thanksgiving meal.  Bring your questions and have them answered by Chef Barbara Sheridan.

Barbara Sheridan, Master Chef and owner of Look Who’s Cooking in Oyster Bay, will demonstrate how to prepare a delicious party menu of side dishes to go with your Thanksgiving meal that will allow you to be able to relax and enjoy your guests. There will be samples to taste. Recipes will be distributed. Registration required for this free program.

DECEMBER

Dessert for the Holidays

On Saturday, December 2, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., come to this workshop and get ready to learn how to prepare a delicious dessert buffet for easy entertaining, stressing creativity in cooking and presentation. This class gives students the opportunity to prepare hot and cold hors d’oeuvre and desserts guaranteed to earn rave reviews. Barbara Sheridan will demonstrate how to prepare delicious holiday desserts for entertaining that will allow you to relax and enjoy your guests. There will be samples to taste. Recipes will be distributed. Registration required for this free program.

Gospel Jazz Concert

On Saturday, December 9, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., come to the Library for a wonderful gospel jazz concert to celebrate the holidays. Nathaniel Anthony Smith is an accomplished saxophonist with nearly 30 years of experience and a favorite at the Library. This free program will be held in the library’s Community Room. 

Chocolate Buffet

On Saturday, December 16, from11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., come and treat yourself to an awesome chocolate experience. Chocolatier Lee Perrotta will demonstrate for us a spectacular array of chocolate delights. The workshop will include French chocolate truffles, chocolate mousse, hand-made chocolate cups, turtles and more.  Recipes and choco-licious samples will be available. Adult Learning Center

CITIZENSHIP PREPARATION CLASS

This fall, the library is offering a U.S. Citizenship Class.  The course will help applicants for U.S. citizenship prepare for all parts of the exam and interview.  The classes will meet twice a week in the Community Room.  This ten-week course is free and is supported by a New York State Adult Literacy Services Grant to the Hempstead Public Library. 

Class Schedule:  The class will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The course begins Monday, October 2 and ends Wednesday, December 13.

JOB CENTER WORKSHOP

HOW TO CREATE A RESUME THAT GETS NOTICED

On, Wednesday, October 25 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., the Library will present a workshop given by Michael Aronin from Right Management. Many subjects will be covered, including:

  • The resume writing process
  • What to include on a resume
  • What to leave off a resume
  • Different resume formats
  • The key parts of the resume - how to write each

The workshop will be held in the Community Room. Registration required for this free program.

World Language Collection Spanish
Did you know that the Library has a collection of fiction and non-fiction titles in Spanish?  The fiction collection includes popular authors translated into Spanish, as well as, the works of authors who write in Spanish.  Non-fiction titles include health, parenting, self-help and cooking.  The collection is shelved on the second floor of the library. Please see the reference librarian for assistance in locating the title of your choice.
