May 2008

Dear Families of Incoming Seventh-grade Students:

The Seventh Grade English Language Arts teachers would like to take this opportunity to introduce our summer reading list. The selections on this list represent a variety of genres, authors, and readability levels.Students are encouraged to be active readers and continue their practice of reading with post-it notes.Students are required to read one title over the summer and complete the following two (2) tasks:

Task 1-Character Captain

Task 2-Quote Response

Both tasks will be collected on Monday, September 8, 2008.If you need another copy of this assignment, you will find it on the WMS website. We have taken the time to choose novels that we believe your child will enjoy. We hope that you will encourage your child to select an appropriate title; you might even choose to read the book with him/her.Certainly, students are encouraged to read more than one over the summer; however, students are only required to complete the writing assignments for one title.Feel free to read more than one!

Since you may not be familiar with all of these books, enclosed you will find a list including the title, author, genre, and a short description of each work.In order to assist your child in making an appropriate selection, you should read the annotations together. The Middle School Library Media Specialist has informed the local library and bookstores so that all titles should be readily available. The teachers hope that you and your child will enjoy sharing the great adventures of reading.

Sincerely,

The Seventh Grade English Language Arts Teachers
