History

The Hicksville Public Library, chartered in l926 to serve a rural community of 6,000, has developed into one of the largest libraries in Nassau County serving more than 40,000 people. Originally located in the Nicholai Street School, demolished in the 1960's. The library has been in its present location since 1950. We have expanded four times, most recently in 1996. A Computer and Resource Center opened in the fall of 2006. Join us on a sentimental journey as we relive some of your library's history.

Materials

• More than 200,000 books are available for loan. Both the adult and children's collections are among the best of Long Island public libraries.
• Audio visual materials include books on cassettes, compact discs, cassettes, videocassettes, and DVD's. More than 15,000 periodicals are available for your reading pleasure or research.
• The local history collection contains extensive documents, newspapers, photographs and memorabilia about Hicksville.

Services

• Internet access is available. Parental consent in person is mandatory under 18 years of age.
• Computer systems available for public use include 20 Dell Pentium Systems. Seven systems are dedicated to the Online Public Access Catalog, and access to the Hicksville Library's online databases, and eight systems are dedicated to internet access. Two computer systems are available in the study room for adults to access Microsoft Office software, and three systems provide access to educational games and Microsoft Office in the Children's Department.
• A public meeting room is available for organizational use.
• Cultural programs are offered regularly. They include musical and dramatic groups, arts and crafts workshops, films and many children's programs. Watch for announcements in the local papers, at the library or in the newsletter.
• Fax Services - $1.25 per page in New York State, $1.50 per page in the continental United States and $5.00 per page for international faxes. This charge applies to outgoing faxes.
• Because of the lack of patron response, Career counseling service will not be offered as of July 1, 2007.
• Interlibrary Loan Service - The Reference Department can access Nassau, Suffolk and OCLC Member Libraries to obtain materials for Hicksville patrons.

Library Policies and Regulations

• Fines are 15 cents a day for adult overdue items and 10 cents a day for children's overdue items.
• Fines for new adult books are 25 cents a day.
• Library materials may be renewed. Only 4-week books may be renewed. No 14-day books may be renewed.
• Videocassettes and DVD"S are available to Hicksville residents for 3 days and may not be renewed. Overdue fines are $2.00 per day per tape with a 50 cent charge for each videocassette not rewound. Videos must be returned to the video desk. If placed in the drop a fine of $1.00 per video will be charged
• New books and audio/video materials circulate only to Hicksville library card holders.

The library's address is 169 Jerusalem Avenue in Hicksville and is just south of Old Country Road.

Long Island Expressway to Exit 41 South or Northern State Exit 35 South exit onto Route 106/107. Head south past Ikea and the Broadway Mall. The Road will fork, bear left onto 107 continue till you get to the second fork (Wendys and Empire Diner on left) bear right onto Jerusalem Ave. Continue on Jerusalem Avenue, cross over Old Country Road (Wagners Funeral Home on right side). Library is on your left (one story brick building) one block south of Old Country Road.

If you are coming from the Southern State Parkway, take exit 27 to the Wantagh State Parkway to exit W2 which is Old Country Road. Make a right and continue east for approximately 2 miles to Jerusalem Avenue and make a right at the light (Wagners Funeral Home is on corner). The library is located on the left, 1 block south of Old Country Road.

The address is 101 Jerusalem Avenue in Hicksville and is just north of Old Country Road.
