MISSION STATEMENT
The Hillside Public Library is established for the purpose of providing all of the residents of School District No. 5 with access to books, pamphlets, periodicals, audio-visual resources, and services which will satisfy their need to become better educated, better informed, and to better enjoy their leisure time.

The democratic principles of our American heritage are ever kept in mind, as is a deep responsibility under the Federal Constitution to promote the broad dissemination of ideas compatible therewith.

The Board recognizes the ideals that the community library should have sufficient resources to enable it to provide the most frequently requested material from its own collection and that the physical facilities of the public library should fit the programs of library service.

The public library is an integral part of the state government.  It should be closely integrated with the community and must know and work with the organized groups and established institutions, which the people maintain.

HOW TO GET A HILLSIDE PUBLIC LIBRARY CARD
Bring a photo ID (driver's license) & a piece of mail with your current school district # 5 address, such as a telephone or utility bill, to the Front Desk. There is $1 fee for each keytag.

*NEW PATRON LIBRARY CARDS
The Library will make every effort to issue a new patron library card on the day the patron visits & submits proof of residency.

However, we have noticed a tremendous increase in cards being requested on weekends. If necessary, depending on the amount of activity in the library, these cards may have to be maled to the patron at a later date. Because these entries may not be processed in the computer immediately, the patron would not be able to take out items until their card is received.

Thank you for your patronage.

Your Hillside Library Card can be used to check out books at every public library in Nassau County. If you decide to visit another library to borrow an item, please call beforehand to check library hours, lending policies, & if the item you want is indeed on the shelf.

IF YOU DO NOT LIVE WITHIN SCHOOL DISTRICT #5:

...And live in an area within Nassau County that is NOT serviced by a library, you may be eligible for a State Mandated Access Card.

...And live outside of Nassau County, you may purchase a Direct Access card for $210.00 a year & be entitled to all the privileges of a District 5 resident. Checks should be made payable to the Hillside Public Library.

...And live outside of Nassau County and work in the district, you may submit a letter from you employer. A free Non-Direct Access
card will be issued for 1 year and allow cardholders to check out only Hillside Library items. This card may not be used at other Nassau County Libraries. A new letter must be submitted each year for renewal.

...And live outside of Nassau County and own a business in the district, you are entitled to a Direct Access card for 1 year. The card may be renewed annually with proof of updated tax payment.
