Black Heritage

The African American Experience (From Home Click Here)
The African American Experience database is a digital electronic resource tool that allows our collection of material on African American history and culture to rapidly grow. Its two primary goals mirror the goals of the library collection. These goals are "to provide rock-solid information from authorities in the field, and to allow African Americans to speak for themselves through a wealth of primary sources"

Visit the Library to Explore Our Black Heritage Collection!

The Black Heritage Collection of the Lakeview contains circulating and reference material that depict black experience, history, and culture. The collection houses a wide range of material in various subject areas that allow patrons of all ages to explore different aspects of black experience in the United States, Africa, and other areas with significant black populations. Hundreds of years of black culture and experience are on display for your benefit at the Lakeview Public Library. We encourage everyone to explore the collection to find something they know they are interested in or to discover something unexpected.

The collection contains historical and modern reference and circulating books that can be young in the adult, children's, and young adult areas of the library. Titles contain stickers indicating "black interest", "black studies" and "black author." Biographies of distinguished African Americans in fields including government, literature, sports, music, art, science, medicine, and entertainment can be found throughout the library. Fiction and nonfiction titles from award-winning, distinguished, and best-selling authors are featured in the collection.

The collection can be used by those who want to learn more about their own heritage and those who wish to explore how black people helped our modern world prosper and progress. The staff of the library can help navigate the collection and find the materials that we acquire in order honor the heritage of our accomplished and diverse community. The rest of the collection and our programs and services are here to allow the community and other visitors to explore to expand their mind and horizons.

The collection is designed to enlighten, educate, and entertain the Lakeview community and everyone who enters the library. Fiction and nonfiction material for all ages, picture books, magazines, databases, music compact disks, and movies are all part of this special collection that has something for every user. The library and its Black Heritage collection will continue to grow in order to allow users to fulfill intellectual pursuits and explore themselves, their neighbors, and culture. Come and celebrate black heritage by seeing how we can meet and exceed your needs and continue to help the community soar ahead with pride while acknowledging the past.
