Greetings, Locust Valley! We will be starting the Summer Reading Program for children on June 27th at 11 AM with John Carlson’s “Be Creative” magic show.   Mr. Carlson is a talented ventriloquist and educational entertainer.   Please come out and join us for this fun-filled opening kickoff to the Summer Reading Club program.  Miss Kristine and the rest of the Children’s Department promise many exciting adventures this year so make sure you are signed up for their programs.

In addition to the children’s reading program, Ms. Beth and Ms. Carolyn have instituted our first annual Adult Summer Reading Program called “Master the Art of Reading”.  This program is nationwide and we are happy to debut it here.  Come in and rate the book that you have read and receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win a gift certificate to a local restaurant.  If you need a recommendation for a book just look for the “STAR”, which is a staff suggestion.

Ms. Leslie, our Young Adult librarian, awarded certificates recently to the Teen Tutors who worked with youngsters from the Grenville Baker Boys & Girls Club during an eight week program at the Library.  The teen tutors met with the children one evening a week.  Each teen worked one-on-one with a child for whom English is a second language at home, to help them with their reading skills which included pronunciation, grammar and comprehension.

The Library will be celebrating its centennial anniversary this year.  We are planning a full day of entertainment on Sunday, October 18th, so mark your calendars.  In preparation for this event we are working with the Locust Valley Historical Society to put together a community cookbook filled with sumptuous recipes and historical photographs from their archives.  What we need from you are some of your favorite family recipes.  Bring them into the library and leave them for Kathy Ray my Assistant Director.  We will be collecting the recipes until the middle of August.

Well, that’s all for now….we’ll chat again soon.
