Born to Read
(Birth to 4 months old)
"Born to Read" is a free giveaway program cosponsored by the Youth Services Department of the Long Beach Public Library and the Nassau Library System. Children born to residents of the Long Beach School District will receive a bright teal tote-bag bearing the heart-shaped "Born to Read" logo. Inside the bag children will discover a plush animal-shaped rattle and a board book with text in English and Spanish. Parents will find a variety of pamphlets which serve as an introduction to the Library (especially the Youth Department!) and encourage the development of family literacy for the young child. Parents may pick up a "Born to Read Coupon" at any library branch. To redeem, bring the coupon, your proof of residency; and a copy of your child's birth certificate to the main library's Youth Services Department. Tote-bags available while supplies last.

Tummy Time
(1 month to 4 months old)
Our newest program begun in September 2007 is focused on the American Academy of Pediatrics
"Back to Sleep, Tummy
to Play" Campaign. Many of today's babies spend their entire day on their backs as a result of the important "back to sleep" recommendations. Because of this, many babies are missing out on quality tummy time. Babies need daily time lying on their tummies in order to develop adequate strength and body awareness as well as providing a foundation for later developmental milestones. Parents are often frustrated by their babies unhappiness at being placed on their tummy and are reluctant to "force" the issue. Our group is aimed at encouraging mommy's and daddy's to develop tummy time in to a fun play time for themselves and their babies with the encouragement of other group members. We'll supply rattles, soft bright colored toys, board books, feathers and whatever else we can dream up to stimulate the baby!
Program runs for five weeks

Mothers' Center

The Mothers' Center offers an opportunity to share feelings and exchange ideas in a non-judgmental, peer-group setting.
Mothers and other caregivers come to share experiences, vent frustrations, find support and make new friends.

The Mothers' Center provides relief from the isolation many mothers experience and can help take the place of the
vanishing extended family. The Center is run by volunteer members.
Sponsored by Mother's Center and a grant from the Middle Country Public Library.

(1 year to 3 years)

Designed for both the parent and the child, this workshop introduces parents to the library and affords them the opportunity to network with other parents and gives them access to early childhood organizations and professionals in a friendly environment. Reading Club
(Birth to Kindergarten)

The goal of the Read-to-Me Reading Club is to foster a love of reading in young children while at the same time providing essential developmental skills that will help children become "school ready". The library works closely with all local area schools and maintains a file of recommended reading lists that may help you and your child select great books to read.
We offer a winter and a summer reading club that run about six weeks.
Reading Clubs are for Children and Teens who reside in the City of Long Beach School District
(Point Lookout, Lido Beach, Long Beach and East Atlantic Beach)
