The following books are recommended
as good reading for kindergartners by the Nassau Library System and the Long
Beach Public Library. An asterisk after the author's name means that this
book is part of a series. The Adventures
of Charlotte and Henry by Bob Graham. Charlotte is wild and reckless;
Henry is cautious and likes to worry. Nevertheless, they are best friends. Five
funny stories. Anna's Secret Friend by Yoriko Tsutsui.
After a move, Anna misses her old friends, but who is leaving small gifts and
then a letter? Could it be a new friend? At the Edge of
the Pond by Jennifer Dewey. From daylight to nightfall we see the harmonious
changes that constantly occur in a pond and meet the creatures that inhabit it. A
Balloon for Granddad by Nigel Gray. When Sam's balloon blows away, Sam
and Dad imagine the balloon's fantastic adventures, traveling over the sea and
above the desert to land in Granddad's backyard in North Africa. Bibi
Takes Flight by Michael Gay. Bibi, the prince of the penguins, longs to
fly and fears his natural element, the frigid water. Discover how he gains both
courage and his heart's desire. Chester's Way by
Kevin Henkes. Chester and Wilson share the exact same way of doing things until
Lilly moves into the neighborhood and changes everything. Coyote
Dreams by Susan Nunes. At night, a little boy watches coyotes enter a
suburban garden, bringing with them songs, dances and stories of their magical
desert world. Eliza's Kindergarten Surprise by Alice
B McGinty. On her first day of school, Eliza fills her pocket with objects-buttons,
a pebble, a napkin, and a piece of yarn-which she makes into a surprise for her
mother who she misses very much. Goldilocks and the Three
Bears by James Marshall. This humorous retelling of the familiar story
will tickle your funny bone. It has been named a Caldecott Honor book.
Grandma's Promise by Elaine Moore. Feeding the rabbits, skating on
a frozen pond, and cozy nights by the woodstove are highlights of Kim's midwinter

in his own way. Ira Says Goodbye by Bernard Waber.
