ADVENTURE

The Adventures of Ali Baba Bernstein by Johanna Hurwitz. David thinks life would be more exciting if his name were Ali Baba.

Artic Expedition by Mike Salisbury. J919.8 If you were going to the Artic, you would need heavy clothes and lots of equipment.

The Big Wave by Pearl S. Buck. Jiya must overcome his fear of tidal waves to become a fisherman.

Nightmare in a Sea of Mind by Gerald Garibaldi. When Dennis went to the Australian Outback, he never expected to be caught in a flash flood.

The Sinking of the Titanic by John Dudman J910.453 D. The Titanic was supposed to be an unsinkable ocean liner when hit an iceberg.

ANIMALS

Dilly the Dinosaur by Tony Bradman.* Dilly wants everything to go his way or he screams.

Koko's Kitten by Dr. Francine Patterson J599.8846 P. Koko is a gorilla who uses sign language and wants a pet cat.

Moses the Kitten by James Herriot J636.807 H. Moses is a very unusual cat; he thinks he belongs to a family of pigs.

The Most Beautiful Dog in the World by Jennie Abbott. The girls were thrilled to get Tiny ready for the dog show until they found out he was a mess.

Pet Day by Harriet Ziefert.* On pet day, Mr. Rose brings in a kangaroo rat, two iguanas and pocket mouse.

Star by Jo Ann Simon. Toni wants to ride but Star seems so big.

BIOGRAPHY

Anne Frank by Vanora Leigh. Anne was a young Jewish girl who hid with her family in an attic during World War II.

Keep the Lights Burning Abbie by Peter Roop. Abbie has to keep the lighthouse working by herself in a storm.

Martin Luther King, Jr., Free At Last by David A. Adler. Martin Luther King spent his life trying to help Black people gain civil rights.

Steven Spielberg by D. L. Mabery. As a child, Steven always knew he would make movies.

The Story of Admiral Peary at the North Pole by Zachary Kent. Admiral Peary was the first man to reach the North Pole using ships and dogsleds.

HISTORICAL FICTION

Cutlass in the Snow by Elizabeth Shub. In 1797, Sam sailed to Fire Island and found pirate treasure.

George Washington's Breakfast by Jean Fritz. George Washington Allen wanted to eat what Washington ate.

Patrick and the Great Molasses Explosion by Marjorie Stover. Patrick is looking for molasses and gets more than he ever expected.

Pioneer Cat by William Hooks. Kate must hide her cat because no pets are allowed on the wagon train to Oregon.

Story for a Black Night by Clayton Bess. Momo tells the story of the smallpox epidemic that hit Africa.

MYSTERY

Cam Jansen and the Mystery of the Television Dog by David A. Adler.* Cam solves mysteries with her photographic memory.

Clues in the Woods by Peggy Parish. Liza, Bill and Jed wonder who is stealing garbage.

Encyclopedia Brown, Boy Detective by Donald Sobol.* Encyclopedia uses his great knowledge to solve mysteries.

The Riddle of the Red Purse by Patricia Reilly Giff.* Who owns the red purse that three people claim?

Sebastian (Supersleuth) and the Egyptian Connection by Mary Blount Christian.* Sebastian is a good detective who happens to be a dog.

REALISTIC FICTION

B is for Betsy by Carolyn Haywood.* First grade is scary until Betsy makes friends.

Beans on the Roof by Betsy Byars. George gets everyone on the roof to write poems.

The Beast in Ms. Rooney's Room by Patricia Reilly Giff.* Richard"Beast" Best has been left back and he hates it.

Freckle Juice by Judy Blume. Andrew wants freckles so much that he is willing to pay Sharon for her secret freckle juice recipe.

The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes. Wanda says she has 100 dresses but only wears one.

The Stories Julian Tells by Ann Cameron.* Julian gets into trouble and tells stories to get out of it.

SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY

Catwings by Ursula Le Guin. The kittens surprise everyone when they fly away.

McBroom and the Big Wind by Sid Fleischman.* Nobody believes McBroom's stories about the wind that only hits his farm.

My Father's Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett.* Elmer runs away to Wild Island.

Space Witch by Don Freeman. Tillie turns her broom into a space ship to scare people from other planets.

Ten in a Bed by Allan Ahlberg. Fairy tale creatures join Dinah in bed everynight.

SPORTS

The Dallas Titans Get Ready for Bed by Karla Kuskin. The football team has to take off lots of clothes and equipment before they can go to bed.

Make Believe Ball Player by Alfred Slote. Henry prefers make-believe baseball to the real game.

The Spy on Third Base by Matt Christopher. T.V. Adams always knows where the ball will be hit.

The Summer Olympics by Caroline Arnold. J796.48 The summer events are in track, swimming, gymnastics, boxing, shooting and riding.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game by Dennis Fertig. J796.3576 Ryan and his father go to Wrigley Field to watch the Chicago Clubs play baseball.
