How
do I get a library card?
If
you are a resident of the Village of Lynbrook, all you need to do is
bring in identification. This can be in the form of your license, or
a bill from your residence. If you live in the South Lynbrook-Hewlett
Library Funding District or the Hewlett Harbor Library Funding District,
you are now entitled to a resident card with full privileges.
Does
a library card expire?
Yes,
they do - every three years for residents. You must renew in person
and bring identification. If you have a work-in village card, this expires
in six months. A new letter from the employer is required to renew this
card.
What is the charge for an overdue book?
14
day books and 7 day videos are 10¢ a day.
28 day books are 5¢ a day.
Rental fees for newer videos & DVDs are $1 a day.
Rental books are .25 a day.
Can
I renew a book?
Yes.
You can now renew online via our online
catalog. You may only renew if no one is waiting for the book and
if you have not renewed it before. You also may not have any outstanding
fines on your card.
Can
I renew by phone?
Yes.
In order to be fair, if you do not use the Internet, we will take your
renewal by telephone. (Of course, if you're reading this, you use the
internet!)
What
if I've gotten an overdue notice and think I have returned the book?
We
advise everyone to keep looking for the book because the majority of
the time, the book is found. If you can not find it, you can call or
come in and we will put a "claims returned" on your card.
We will periodically check for the book and you should, too.
What
if I've lost a book?
You
will receive a series of overdue notices. Keep looking for the book.
Wait until you receive the third notice which will be a bill. If you
still haven't found the book by then, you will have to come into the
library and pay for the price of the book plus a $5.00 replacement fee.
Don't forget to keep looking!
Can
I use my card at other libraries?
Yes,
you may use your card at all other Nassau Library System Libraries as long
as it is not expired, you do not owe any money or have books that are long overdue on your card. Please be aware that other library my little access to some of their collection, especially audio-visual materials.
What
if I've lost my library card/forgot my card at home?
If
you've lost your card, you need to come in with your identification
to get another one. There is a $2.00 fee for the first replacement and
$5.00 for the second. If you have forgotton your card you may use photo ID temporarily at Lynbrook Library only. Other libraries will not accept ID other than a valid library card. Library cards are non-transferable. You can not use another family
member's card in place of your own.

Computers
Does
the library have any computers for the public to use?
Yes.
We have computers that access the Internet and we have computers that
you can use for word processing.
Can
I print out material from the computer?
Yes, your first 3 pages are free, but after that there is a 10¢ charge for each black & white page and 25¢ for each color page.
Do
I have to be a resident of Lynbrook to use the computers?
No.
With our new self sign-up system all you need is a valid card from any library in Nassau County.
Those with no library card may request a visitor's pass.
Do
you have a time limit when I use a public computer?
Yes,
if you have a library card you are entitled to 1 hour's use of the computer. You may sign up for only one more hour if there is no one on the wait list.
Those with visitor's passes get 30 minutes of computer use which may also be extended once if there is no one on the wait list.
What
computer programs do you have for the public to use?
Microsoft
Word, Excel, Access, Publisher and Powerpoint.
What
is an "online catalog"?
It
is the "card catalog" on computer. It offers the ability to
search in many ways. For example, if you only know part of the title
or author you can search by keyword.
What
is an "online database"?
It is a way to access various materials online. For instance, some of
our databases give you access to magazine and newspaper articles. Click

These are available at the library and from home.
I
know nothing about computers, how will I be able to use them?
While we do not give individualized instruction, we will be happy to
help you with your search. We do offer occasional basic computer classes.

Children's
Services
Do
you have computers for children to use?
Yes.
We have six computers which have Internet access, Microsoft Word, Excel,
Microsoft Access, Publisher and Powerpoint, along with a variety of educational
games. There is a one hour limit.
What storytimes do you offer?
Baby
Rhyme Time for 10 weekolds - Pre-walkers,
L'il Playmates for Walkers - 29 month olds,
Toddler Story Time for 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 year olds and,
Pre-school Storytime for 3 1/2 - 5 year olds.
Pajama Story Times once a month Ages: 4 - 7
Kindergarten - 1st grade during the school year, at various times.
When
do you offer storytimes?
We
have many different sessions. Dates and times vary for each age group.

How
can my teenager volunteer at the library?
We
have a Book Buddy program for children entering grade 6 and above. It
is mainly run during the summer months. Book Buddies help in the Children's
Room with the Summer Reading Program. We sign up Book Buddies in May
and they start volunteering at the end of June. We have occasional activities
over the school year that need some volunteers.
