BARRY LEWIS, Historian
GREENWICH VILLAGE IN THE 1910's & 20's: OUR FIRST BOHEMIA
New York has been home to "bohemians"
since Walt Whitman hung out at Pfaff's bar in the 1850's.
But the bohemian generation of the 1910's -- including John
Sloan, Edna St. Vincent Millay and Max
Eastman -- gave Bohemia a specific address when they settled in and coined
the nameGreenwich
Village. Barry Lewis tells the story
of how these bohemians pioneered a lifestyle we take for granted in
the twenty-first century.
