Starting this Monday, June 25, 2007, children ages 4 through entering grade 5 can sign up for our Summer Reading Club and "Get a Clue @ Your Library"!
Come and pick up your packet or "case file" and win prizes by reading your way through the summer! You can also make your own special I-Spy collage on June 25 from 3-5 PM.
Teens and pre-teens entering grades 6-12 can also join our Summer Reading Club at the Reference Desk. "You Never Know" what you'll find at the library!
There's even a new Summer Reading Club this year for infants and toddlers! Infants and children up to age 3 can join "Wee Reader," and parents and children can earn prizes as they complete basic reading tasks together.

Starting June 2
The Mineola Library is happy to announce the start of the Museum Pass Program. Through this program , Mineola residents can visit some of the area's great museums and gardens for free. Here is how it works:
1) The Library will purchase family memberships at several museums and gardens on Long Island and in Manhattan. This membership becomes the Mineola Library's Museum Pass for each particular instituition.
2) Mineola Library cardholders over the age of 18 can reserve the pass for the institution of their choice up to two months in advance. Reservations must be made in person at the Reference Desk.
3) The Mineola Library cardholder checks out the museum pass from the library, just as they would a book or video. Passes circulate for 4 days: a Weekday pass is for Monday checkout, Thursday return; a Weekend pass is for Thursday checkout, Monday return. There is a $10.00 per day late charge for passes not returned on time.
4) The number of free admissions for each pass varies, check below for details.
Our continued and generous partnership with the Friends of the Mineola Library has resulted in the purchase of our first two Museum Passes. These are available for reservation and circulation now:
1) The New York Botanical Garden: The Garden is alive with opportunities for discovery, from an ecotour of the world of Enid A. Haupt Conservatory to an innovative indoor/outdoor science museum for kids to 50 exquisite gardens and plant collections, all on a 250 acre National Historic Landmark site in New York City's Bronx borough. This summer, the Garden will feature a blockbuster sculpture exhibition of the works of Henry Moore. The library's museum pass includes free admission for 2 adults and 5 children. A parking pass is also included.
2) American Museum of Natural History: A New York institution on Central Park West, AMNH contains millions of specimens and cultural artifacts. The world famous dinosaur hall is enjoyed by children (and adults) of all ages. Anyone who grew up in the New York area no doubt remembers that special field trip to discover the wonders of this museum. The Library's museum pass includes free admission for two adults and four children, as well as discounts to the space show and IMAX theater.
And starting July 1, thanks to an increase in the library's programming budget, we will offer museum passes for Museum of the City of New York, Morgan Library and Museum, and Old Westbury Gardens.
Our Summer Reading raffle giveaways run weekly starting the week of July 6! Be sure to visit the Children's Room this summer for a chance to win great prizes! We will be raffling off prizes, donated by our Summer Reading partners, to fun places such as Adventureland, Dave & Buster's, and the Cradle of Aviation Museum! To enter and win, children must be signed up for our Summer Reading program.
For everyone who joined the Mineola Library's 2009 Summer Reading Club: Monday, August 31, 2009, is the last day to hand in your Summer Reading BINGO cards for prizes!
Tweens and teens in grades 5-12 are invited to the grand opening party of the Mineola Library's new Tween/Teen Room, which will be available in our Community Room after school, from 3-5pm, for doing homework, reading, Wii gaming, watching movies, and listening to CDs! The Mineola Library will be a drop off location for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve's "Toys for Tots" campaign, a program to collect toys and distribute to needy children in the community during the holiday season. From November 2 - December 19, you may drop off a new and unwrapped toy in a "Toys for Tots" box located at the Circulation Desk or in the Children's Room.
Also, the Mineola Library will be a drop off spot for knitting yarn to be used by the charity "We Care Blankets." Their project is to knit blankets for children undergoing chemotherapy. They supply colorful blankets to 23 oncology units on Long Island. The drop off box will be in the Children's Room.
Please donate toys or spare some yarn for needy children at the Mineola Library!

Other passes we offer include free admission to the following: The Heckscher Museum of Art, The Long Island Children's Museum, Garvies Point Museum and Preserve, Old Westbury Gardens, American Museum of Natural History, New York Botanical Garden, and the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.

*Summer loan applies to adult fiction and non-fiction. It does not apply to children's & young adult materials, magazines, audio/video materials, travel books, study guides, new materials, and school summer reading list books. This service is only available to Mineola Library cardholders.

The Children's Library has compiled a wish list of items we would like to purchase for the Family Place Space. A visual display of these items will be available near the Circulation Desk. We would be grateful for any donation, in any amount, large or small!
The Mineola Library Children's Room recently purchased an Early Literacy Station (ELS) from the AWE Company. The Early Literacy station is a stand-alone educational computer workstation specifically designed for children between the ages of 2 and 10 years. The Early Learning Station is internet-free and includes 50 educational game titles (in English and Spanish) covering seven curricular areas and is top rated by Children's Technology Review.
Help us fight hunger on Long Island! Please donate your canned goods this holiday season to Island Harvest in a bin by the Circulation Desk at the Mineola Memorial Library. Island Harvest is the largest hunger relief organization on Long Island. The last day for donating at the library is December 20th.

Free Sesame Street e-books are now available on our website (http://www.nassaulibrary.org/mineola)! To access this service, just click on the Sesame Street logo on our front page and enter your library card's barcode number. "When you read a Sesame Street eBook with your child, you can make story time extra engaging with bright pages, audio narration, interactivity, animation, and more."
The Library is conscientious about these challenging economic times. After a detailed review of library expenditures, and the rising cost of printing and postage for the newsletter, it was decided to decrease the quantity of printed newsletters. To further reduce expenses, the newsletter will no longer be mailed to your home. Beginning September 2011, a limited number of printed newsletters will be available in the library. Mineola residents who want future newsletters mailed to them can sign up on a mailing list which will be available at the Circulation desk. The Mineola Library will be holding a food drive to benefit Long Island Cares INC, the Harry Chapin Food Bank. If you would like to make a food donation, a receptacle will be located in the lobby.
