ADULT PROGRAMS

FRIENDS OF THE NORTH BELLMORE PUBLIC LIBRARY
The Friends of the North Bellmore Public Library have been meeting every month for the past year.  They are always looking to attract more members and come up with ways to enhance our Library.  Their first goal is to raise funds to purchase a new piano for our Community Room.  The next Friends meeting has been scheduled for            Tuesday, June 16TH at 10 AM.  If you have any questions, please call Mr. Bazzicalupo at 785-6260 ext.301.

Is electronic media replacing the good old book?

How can we meet the needs of adult literacy learners?
No registration is required and all are welcome.  Refreshments will be served.

The Girls by Lori Lansens
Now nearing thirty, Rose and Ruby are soon to be history's oldest conjoined twins, and Rose decides it is time to write the story of her short but extraordinary life. As Ruby watches Rose write her memoirs, she decides she wants to tell her part too. Though they are as close as two people can be, their lives and voices are wonderfully, powerfully distinct. Every experience of growing up comes rushing through in their telling-- their first loves, their painful choices, losses, and triumphs--but every experience is doubled, sometimes joyfully and sometimes    painfully.

Our late spring      session continues on Fridays, June 5 – June 19 from 1PM to 2PM.

Marley & Me is the story of journalists, John and Jen, who are a newly married couple. Marley is the adopted puppy that no one wants, a high-strung lab who is virtually untrainable. Marley shreds cushions, destroys floors and walls and most everything in between. Instead of taking him to the pound, they love their dog and he faithfully loves them in return. John and Jen eventually have three       children and Jen gives up her career to be a mom. John's career  continues to advance as he carves a niche as a local columnist. The  family moves from Florida to Pennsylvania. John struggles with his own career direction, but Marley remains the constant. A memoir of Philadelphia Inquirer columnist John Grogan's life with his yellow  Labrador retriever.

Doubt takes place in 1964 at St. Nicholas in the Bronx. Father Flynn is a charismatic priest who is trying to upend the school’s strict     customs which have long been fiercely guarded by Sister Aloysius Beauvier. Sister is the iron-gloved principal who believes in the power of fear and discipline. The school has just accepted its first black  student, Donald Miller. But when Sister James shares with Sister Aloysius her suspicion that Father Flynn is paying too much personal attention to Donald, Sister Aloysius sets off on a personal crusade to unearth the truth and to expunge Flynn from the school. Now without any proof besides her moral certainty, Sister Aloysius locks into a battle of wills with Father Flynn. This dispute threatens to tear apart the community with its irrevocable consequence.

GALLERY ABOVE THE SHELVES
During June the Library will be displaying the watercolor paintings by Michael T. Golden.  As an art major in high school, Mr. Golden entered a national art contest sponsored by the Carnegie Institute and was awarded First Place.  He was inspired by his teachers to continue in the art field but military service, employment, marriage and family took precedence.  It wasn’t until retirement, 47 years later, that he was able to study art and paint again.  College courses and the guidance of three local art teachers enhanced his talent.  He now continues to paint on his own.  Mr. Golden also enjoys teaching line dancing.

DON’T MISS OUT
We may have some places left in either of our upcoming bus trips:  Giselle at the Met on June 10 or Miss Saigon at Gateway Playhouse on July 9.  Call the Library to check availability.

SAVE THE DATE
Plan to join us on Thursday, September 17, for a performance of A Chorus Line at Gateway Playhouse.  Check the July/August   Inklings for full details.
