We enjoyed a hot buffet catered by Bagel Doctor (1380 Montauk Highway, Oakdale (631) 218-3535), free raffles and dessert. Tours of the library were given by Connie Stanga and Judy Hopping, both of East Meadow Library. Our guest speaker for the evening was one of the country’s most popular and respected psychics, Daniel Akner of Freeport. Daniel was gracious enough to donate a one-hour private reading at his house as an additional raffle prize. Over $200 was raised from this raffle and was donated to the “What Are Libraries All About” video fund being produced by NCLA. Our Open Houses are a great way to network with staff from other libraries. If you would like to host an Open House at your library, please contact any Clerical Board member.

Most of the Clerical Board was able to attend, including Connie Stanga, Mary Broderick, Dalal Fatoush, Kay Fitzgerald, Debbie Fox, Lucy Heredia, Kathy Lanzaro, Jeanette Nicoletti, Chris Penna, Ilene Reif and Alicia Sanchez. Carole Carbone of the Bayville Library was the winner of the weekend spa bag, Maria Rizzuti of NLS was the winner of the dish garden and our own Ilene Reif was the winner of the fashion basket. We decided to have the fashion basket in keeping with our “Dress for Success” theme of our Open House, held at the Farmingdale Library on March 2, 2004.

The Clerical Division sponsored the program at the Conference, Communicate Smarter with People - Develop Charisma! Our speaker was Professor Esther Bogin, Assistant Professor of Communications at Nassau Community College. She had us think about our way of communicating with such questions as, “How do I want to come across? What outcome do I want? What am I really communicating when they stop listening to my words and only focus on my body language?” The program was very well attended, and we received only positive feedback.
