David Kane Wins B.E.S.T. Award

The 2010 B.E.S.T. Award (Bringing Excellence in Service by Teens) was presented to David Kane of the Rockville Centre Public Library at the Long Island Library Conference.

David was nominated by Terry Ain, Rockville Centre's YA Librarian and chosen from a group of worthy candidates by the members of the YASD board. The award was presented by Barbara Mickowski, vice president of the YASD of NCLA.

Over the past several years David has not only donated his time to the library, but has contributed his creative talents and visionary ideas. David has served as a member of the Teen Advisory Board for over three years and is currently president. He maintains the teen blog and his involvement on the board has led to many successful teen-run programs at the library.

As a way to involve the Tween population, David has conducted a journalism program, creating a Teen/Tween newspaper, So The Paper, now in its third edition. His dedication and commitment as director/producer/judge/publicity manager for a talent competition The Rockville Centre Idol demonstrated not only his creative talents but served as a statement to his character.

Panel 034 (4) copy.jpg

Our NCLA YASD-organized program at the 2010 Long Island Library Conference was an overwhelming hit!
The panal discussion: Recipe for Success: Collaboration Between School and PublicLibraries was moderated by Margaux DelGuidace, School Library Media Specialist, Garden City High School & Youth Services, Freeport Memorial Library. The other participants in the informative program were Karen Farrell, Head of Youth Services, Freeport Memorial Library; Cindy Soto and Michelle Samuel, Youth Services, Freeport Memorial Library; and Marge Kelly, Young Adult Librarian, Garden City Public Library.

The YASD table, with it's fabulous baskets, display board, and clever give-away of hand sanitizer with our logo, was one of the most popular!
